SYBASE ANNOUNCES INTERACTIVE, MULTIMEDIA TRAINING SOFTWARE

SKILS Helps Users Quickly Gain Productivity in Client/Server Computing by
Bringing Powerful, Interactive Training Courses to Their Desktops

EMERYVILLE, CA, May 24, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced its Sybase Knowledge Interactive Learning Systems
(SKILS) family of interactive, multimedia training software for Sybase
products. SKILS software uses text, graphics, animation, simulation, and
sound to provide users self-defined, self-paced training on Sybase
products. SKILS software, which runs off CD-ROM disks, is based on
Sybase's industry-leading Gain Momentum object-oriented, multimedia
authoring tool.

SKILS interactive training software is part of Sybase's comprehensive
strategy for the extended enterprise computing environment, comprised of
an increasingly important cross-section of elective users. More and more
firms seeking to enhance business operations and customer service are
encouraging elective users - including employees, customers, and business
partners - to tap into their information systems. Multimedia tools are
playing a key role in this effort, combining sound, graphics, and video,
to deliver applications that are entertaining, attractive, and easy to
use. Sybase's SKILS software is a leading example of how to effectively
take training to the extended enterprise. With SKILS, users have an
easy-to-navigate, fun-to-use interface for learning and practicing
essential database and client/server computing techniques.

Interactive Learning in the Extended Enterprise

A top challenge identified by corporate information systems (IS) directors
is retraining IS professionals for the migration from mainframe systems to
client/server computing. Traditional classroom training, while effective,
has drawbacks. First, it pulls people away from the office, temporarily
reducing productivity. Second, it doesn't allow people to incrementally
learn on the job. Third, it is not economically feasible to send all
employees to classes. Interactive training applications that allow users
to learn on the job promise businesses a highly cost-effective
alternative. In fact, interactive software could speed learning by 30% to
50% over conventional methods, according to a recent report that
consulting firm Interactive Educational Systems prepared for the Software
Publishers Association.

"Customers are telling us that while they highly value our training
centers, it can be difficult to send their employees to off-site
training," said Stu Schuster, executive vice president of marketing for
Sybase. "With SKILS, we are able to extend training beyond its traditional
boundaries to deliver attractive, easy-to-use training tools that
encourage users to learn as they work. We believe this extremely
cost-effective model for training is an important example of the extended
enterprise applications that will become prevalent within businesses over
the next few years."

SKILS Features Reflect Customer Requirements

Sybase customers played a critical role in the development of SKILS, from
overall functionality to details such as the size of various windows. The
SKILS development team let customers experiment with early prototypes of
the training software. Incorporating these users' input, Sybase developed
a range of features to help customers easily navigate through the SKILS
programs and select the elements that best serve their individual
requirements. Key features include:

* The SKILS Pallette is an intuitive interface into the system that lets
users choose different SKILS functions - training, documentation, help
guide, procedures, audio, language preferences, etc.

* The Navigation Map allows users to see the structure of the training
material, with indicators to show increasingly detailed listings. Shaded
areas indicate where users previously have reviewed a specific topic.

* The SKILS Notes feature lets users leave notes either for themselves or
for other users.

* The Scrapbook stores users' notes along with an icon to show the
appropriate point of origin. By double-clicking on the icon, a user can
open up the page where the note was entered.

* The History function saves the path a user has followed, then creates a
path consisting of only the pages and material selected.

* Newhire allows managers who want to introduce only certain materials to a
new employee to create one or several mini-courses, which are then stored
in the Scrapbook.

* Bookmark lets users set a mark for a specific page, so that they can
easily return to that page whenever they need to.

Availability

The first SKILS program, SKILS for the Structured Query Language, is in
beta test now and is currently scheduled to begin shipping on CD-ROM in Q3

FastTrack to Transact SQL, Sybase's most widely attended course; SKILS for
Build Momentum, Sybase's object-oriented development environment; and
SKILS for SQL Server Administration. SKILS pricing will be $395 per
supported site.
