RACAL-DATACOM JOINS ATM FORUM

July 18, 1994 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- Racal-Datacom, Inc. announced today that
the company has joined the ATM Forum as a principal member. The ATM Forum
is composed of more than 200 member companies dedicated to publishing
workable Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) specifications.

"Racal-Datacom believes that ATM will become one of the dominant
communications methods over the next five years and our active
participation in the ATM Forum is a result of that view," said Gerald
Michalak, Engineering Manager in charge of ATM development. "The Racal
products that today provide LAN and WAN connectivity via the existing Time
Division Multiplexed hierarchy will evolve along with the public network
to provide ATM solutions. Our membership in the ATM Forum allows us to
contribute to the emerging ATM standards and helps us ensure that our
products meet the ATM Forum's standards and test suites.

"Our participation in the ATM Forum allows us to anticipate the emerging
aspects of the ATM standards as they develop," Michalak said. "This gives
a 6- to 12-month advantage as opposed to waiting for published standards
before incorporating a feature into our designs."

Racal supports the ATM Forum's published standards including the User to
Network Interface (UNI version 3.0). An updated version of the traffic
management and LAN emulation work is expected by the end of the year.

Michalak believes that one of the initial applications of ATM will be in
connecting remote LANs together with communication facilities that operate
at the same speed as the LAN. This will allow applications to run the same
whether the user is local to the application server or at a remote
facility. The current work of the ATM Forum in managing the high rate of
cell traffic associated with these connections and interfacing to the
upper levels of the protocol stacks is a crucial component in delivering
these solutions to the customer.

The ATM Forum, located in Foster City, California, is an open industry
group dedicated to publishing standards which allow ATM equipment to be
developed and interconnected. The Forum has numerous working groups
including Physical Layer standards, Traffic Management, Network to Network
connections and Service Aspects & Architecture.

Racal-Datacom provides high-performance solutions for many types of LANs,
MANs and WANs, including intelligent wiring hubs, routers, multiplexers,
modems, digital access products and Racal Management System, a graphical
LAN/WAN network management system recently integrated with
Hewlett-Packard's HP Openview.
