Why do we have datacomm standards?

Since its inception in 1970, Multi-Tech Systems has supported and adhered
to communications standards. Without standards, the universality that
makes datacomm so appealing and critical to business operations crumbles.

Never has this been more evident than in the development and adoption of
the latest datacomm standard. At this time, the final draft of the V.34
standard -adopted on June 9 -- is only incorporated in a handful of modems
on the market. Our new 28.8K bps MultiModemII is clearly the class of
these modems. It offers you the security and convenience of upgrades via a
toll-free call to our BBS, from which you download free firmware.

However, most of the 28.8K bps modems currently on the market -- including
the so-called "V.fc" or "V.Fast class" modems -- were manufactured and
sold long before the V.34 draft was finalized. Predictably, these modems
may lack several important characteristics of the finalized V.34 draft.
Among them:

** V.8 start-up sequence: ensures the highest possible V.34 speed from the
outset. If a V.Fast class modem has a different start up sequence that is
not compatible with V.8, it will not connect with V.34 modems at 28.8K
bps.

** 4D (four dimensional) encoding: provides better signal-to-noise ratio
for more accurate data and higher connect percentages at V.34 speeds. Some
V.Fast class modems use the less sophisticated 2D encoding algorithm.

** Rate renegotiation: facilitates quick speed changes, taking less than
one second. V.Fast class modems may not incorporate this feature.

Why is all this important? Because it reinforces Multi-Tech's conviction
that the data communications industry-- manufacturers, users, dealers,
everyone -- is best served when standards are respected and supported.
Sometimes, as in the case of V.34, this will require patience and
sacrifice, and Multi-Tech Systems will again be up to the task.
