SYBASE ANNOUNCES NATIVE SQL SERVER SUPPORT OF NOVELL'S IPX/SPX PROTOCOL

Support of PC Protocol Compatible with Enhanced Versions of Eight Leading
Unix Operating Systems

EMERYVILLE, CA, JULY 13,1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced SYBASE SQL Server 10 compatibility with enhanced
versions of eight leading Unix operating systems that currently include
support for Novell's popular local area network (LAN) communications
protocol, IPX/SPX (Internet Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange).
With today's announcement, Sybase simplifies enterprise interoperability
by allowing PC LAN users utilizing IPX/SPX to directly access data managed
by a UNIX-based SYBASE SQL Server product. Customers can now more easily
install a UNIX-based SQL Server database into most existing PC LANs
without making an additional client investment in networking protocol
software.

Sybase's SQL Server software with native IPX/SPX support is scheduled for
availability on the following UNIX platforms: AT&T UNIX MP-RAS, Digital
Alpha Open VMS, Digital Alpha OSF/1, HP/UX, IBM RS/6000, SCO UNIX, Sequent
DYNIX/ptx, and Sun Solaris.

"Customers can not introduce a high-performance, scalable UNIX-based SQL
Server into their LAN environments using the communications protocol
already in place in the bulk of LANs today," said Skip Glass, group
director of product marketing at Sybase. "Supporting IPX/SPX allows users
to obtain the power of UNIX on their PC networks without incurring the
higher overhead of additional network options or drivers on the client."
Running in over 70% of all enterprise LANs, IPX/SPX is the second most
commonly deployed PC LAN communications protocol today, making it the de
facto PC LAN standard.

A communications protocol is a set of rules that enables computers to
connect with one another over a network and to exchange information in a
compatible format. Sybase supports a wide variety of communications
protocols in addition to IPX/SPX, including TCP/IP, DECnet, Banyan Vines,
StarGROUP, and Named Pipes.

Until now, in order to interact with UNIX-based SQL Servers, PC users with
IPX/SPX installed for accessing services on the LAN had to install TCP/IP
on their client systems. This has increased cost, maintenance,
installation overhead, and created more complicated system administration.
Other client/server vendors still require the purchase and installation of
additional, expensive, and complicated software on the network to perform
protocol translations or "interchange" in order to make UNIX-based
database servers accessible on a PC LAN.

"Because enterprise interoperability is key to the successful integration
of our disparate systems, we benefit significantly from the new 'plug and
play' functionality that IPX/SPX support brings to our UNIX SQL Servers,"
said Mike McDougall. chief information officer, Fox Broadcasting Company.

"Sybase s native support of the IPX/SPX protocol in the SQL Server 10
product provides NetWare users easier access to relational,
non-relational, and legacy data throughout the enterprise," said Toby
Corey, senior director of marketing for NetWare products at Novell. "This
significantly strengthens both Sybase and Novell's industry-leading roles
in providing enterprise interoperability."
