Boxborough, Mass., July 25, 1994 -- Expanding on the proven strength of the
popular Versa line, NEC Technologies, Inc. (NECT) today introduces the
Versa V Series of color notebook computers offering outstanding
performance, exceptional expandability, excellent graphics and
comprehensive docking options at highly attractive price points.

The Versa V complements the top-of-the-line Versa E series of high
performance notebook computers and the Versa S series of small,
light-weight "no compromise" notebooks. The Versa E is designed for the
power user who requires lightning-fast computing while the Versa S offers
full notebook functionality at the lowest possible travel weight.

"By offering more value for the money, we continue to set new standards in
on-the-go computing," said Bob Levin, director of marketing for NECT's
Portable Systems Group. "The Versa V Series' rock solid performance,
comprehensive docking options and generous expansion are perfectly suited
for corporate, small business and home office users."

Design Philosophy

The Versa V Series is designed to keep pace with both its users' growing
needs and advances in technology by providing exceptional expansion
capabilities. The Series' unparalleled flexibility allows the user to
expand their system by simply adding new components. If more memory or a
larger hard disk drive is required, the user can add them in. For enhanced
communications, a VersaPage Messaging Card, VersaConnect Cellular
Communications Kit or 14.4Kbps data/fax modem can also be added.

For coast-to-coast computing, the user simply removes the floppy disk drive
and inserts a second battery. Audio capability for multimedia applications
is available through a plug-in card. Expanded systems operation is
possible through SCSI and network options. A full complement of ports is
available for plugging in an external monitor, printer, and keyboard or
mouse.

The Versa V can also be connected to various docking options including the
new Docking Station II, which is Plug and Play ready and features two
full-sized ISA slots and three drive bays.

"The Versa V maintains the traditional Versa design philosophy - that is,
make it easy for the users to access more power and performance from their
notebook computers. The Versa V and Docking Station II provide desktop
functionality to professionals who find themselves on and off the road,"
added Levin. "The wireless connectivity achieved through PCMCIA devices
such as VersaConnect and VersaPage provide these road warriors with the
latest information on-the-fly, coast-to-coast. Most importantly, there is
value in buying a Versa as a product that allows users the ability to
upgrade as necessary to meet their growing needs."

* Picture Perfect Displays for Crisp Images

The enhanced DSTN color Versa V model has a 250MB hard disk drive that is
user upgradable to either 340MB or 540MB. The active-matrix TFT color
models are configured with 250MB, 340MB and 540MB hard disk drives that
are also user upgradable. All models have a full-sized 9.5" display
capable of presenting more than 65,000 colors for the TFT models and 256
colors for the DSTN model. Simultaneous display of an external video and
LCD is also possible. And high-performance local bus video with video
accelerator and video RAM supports up to 1024 x 768 through the external
CRT port.

"Many people need color for various applications, but for some, the level
of display precision is more critical than for others," Levin noted. "All
our displays offer excellent quality. We wanted to respond to customer
requests for different levels of color display technology, and the Versa V
accommodates these requests."

* Powerful Built-in Performance

The Versa V is powered by the Intel SL-Enhanced i486 DX2/50MHz processor
with 8KB of cache. An integrated math coprocessor is provided for
heavy-duty number crunching.

* Coast-to-Coast Run-Time

To achieve maximum battery run-time, NEC's DoubleTime technology can
accommodate a second NiMH battery by removing the 1.44MB floppy drive.
With 3.3 volt components and NEC DoubleTime technology, the Versa V is
stingy on battery power so it can be generous on battery life -- up to 10
hours without recharging when users add the optional second battery.
Recharge time is a quick 1.6 hours with power off, 2.7 hours with power
on. Four levels of power management -- high, low, custom and off --
control inactivity time-outs for predetermined system components.

* Desktop Docking

The Versa V provides multiple docking opportunities, which is unusual for
this class of computers, making the Versa V an ideal desktop replacement
for professionals who need to take their computer with them, but want the
convenience and functionality of a desktop when they return to their
offices. With the new Docking Station II, users can now dock their Versa
even while it is turned on and get instant access to external peripherals
such as the mouse, keyboard or monitor. In addition, the Versa Docking
Station II is Plug and Play ready so it will support future versions of
Windows.

* Storage and Disk Drives

The Versa V Series offers a 250MB, 340MB or 540MB hard disk drive, which is
the largest available for this category of computers, and 1.44MB floppy
drive, standard. All models are user upgradable to 540MB. The Series
offers 4MB of high-speed RAM standard which is user upgradable to 8MB,
12MB, 16MB, 20MB or larger as available.

* User Interfaces

The sleek design and curved corners of the Versa V house a full-size,
83-key tactile keyboard with 12 function keys and full travel, 3mm stroke.
A large, 16mm VersaTrack trackball, located on the front of the unit, was
designed to work with the hand, not against it. Two programmable mouse
buttons are located on either side of the trackball for easy clicking.

Warranty, Availability and Pricing

A unique UltraCare warranty is available on the Versa V in addition to the
standard, return-to-factory, three-year warranty on all parts and labor.
When the customer completes and mails the Product Registration Card, the
customer receives UltraCare free for one full year. UltraCare provides:
toll-free hardware support hot line number available 24 hours, 7 days a
week to request repair service; free overnight courier pick-up and return
of the system anywhere in the United States or Canada; repair of the
system within one business day after arrival at the service depot and
on-site warranty service for specified Versa Docking options. An
additional two years of UltraCare service can be purchased for $99 ($132
Canada). An international warranty service program is available in 26
countries.
