Apple Tallies More Than 200 Power Mac Applications Shipping at MacWorld

Choices Abound For Apple's Growing Base of Power Mac Customers: New
Software Joins Thousands of Current Macintosh, DOS, and Windows
Applications on Power Mac

BOSTON MACWORLD--August 1, 1994--Underscoring the success of Power
Macintosh , Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that more than 200 Power
Macintosh native applications --including virtually all mainstream
applications-- are expected to be highlighted at MacWorld Boston.
Optimized to take advantage of the efficiency of the PowerPC RISC
architecture, Power Macintosh native applications perform two to four
times faster than applications running on today's fastest Motorola 68040-
and Intel 80486-based systems. And, independent research shows that
native applications on Power Macintosh often run notably faster than
comparable programs on Pentium-based systems. Mathematical calculations,
found in many graphical programs, run up to 10 times faster on the Power
Macintosh. Among the developers who are expected to announce or be
shipping native applications by MacWorld Boston are ACI US, Inc., Adobe
Systems, Inc., Aldus Corporation, Claris Corporation, Frame Technology
Corporation, Great Plains Software, Inc., Insignia Solutions, Macromedia,
Microsoft Corporation, National Instruments, Quark, Inc., Scitex, and
WordPerfect Corporation.

Power Macintosh Runs Enormous Selection of Software With the availability
of these new native applications, Power Mac customers can choose from the
richest array of personal computer applications to help them meet their
unique computing requirements. Apple's base of third-party developers have
amply penetrated key market segments including the areas of general
business and productivity, publishing, education, multimedia, technical
markets, and entertainment. In addition to the more than 200 native
applications accelerated for Power Macintosh, customers can also choose
from the tens of thousands of Macintosh and Windows applications that can
run unaltered on Power Macintosh computers. Insignia Solutions'
SoftWindows program allows Power Macintosh systems to run DOS and Windows
programs and is available bundled in Power Macintosh configurations or as
a standalone product.

"Developers from around the world are helping to fulfill the promise of
Power Macintosh,"said Ian Diery, vice president and general manager of
Apple's Personal Computer Division.

"There's a wide range of native applications now available for the Power
Macintosh in all major usage areas. This means that for most customers,
the wait for native apps is over. Power Macintosh customers have more
software to choose from than customers of any other platform, as DOS,
Windows, and 68K-based Macintosh applications can run on Power Macs
configured with SoftWindows. This choice, combined with a computer that
offers compatibility and phenomenal performance at a competitive price,
make the Power Mac the single most compelling platform on the market
today."

Transitioning to the Future

To make the transition to Power Macintosh easy for customers, the majority
of software vendors have been offering very aggressive upgrade programs
from their 680x0 version software --and in some cases, Windows versions--
to native products for Power Macintosh systems. With the availability of
major native applications, customers who have recently purchased 68K
versions of software can upgrade to the Power Mac version at little or no
cost.

"Microsoft has always been committed to providing applications and key
technologies to Macintosh customers," said Pete Higgins, senior vice
president, Desktop Applications at Microsoft. And we are pleased to
announce the new versions of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Word and
PowerPoint for the Power Macintosh at MacWorld."

Power Macintosh is the next-generation of Macintosh personal computers
based on PowerPC, a new RISC-based microprocessor family developed by
Apple , IBM, and Motorola. Power Macintosh computers bring new levels of
performance and functionality to personal computing at low prices. Apple
plans to offer a full line of Power Macintosh products from entry-level to
high-end systems and many upgrade paths for 680x0-based Macintosh
customers.
