Corporate & Strategic Changes Take Bitstream Into the Electronic
Mainstream

BOSTON, Mass.--August 15, 1994--Bitstream today announced key internal and
external changes that reflect the company's redirected focus on universal
electronic portability for fonts and documents. New OEM agreements along
with the most profitable quarter in the company's history and the hiring
of a new vice president of sales marketing, John Seguin, confirm the
success of this transition.

OEM technology deals

In line with its increased emphasis on providing OEM technology solutions,
Bitstream Inc. announced the completion of numerous partnership agreements
for its 4-in-1 integrated font processor. Licenses have been granted to
Apple Computer, Inc., Autodesk Inc., Hangul & Computer Co. Ltd., Kyocera
Corporation, Lotus Development Corp., Seiko Epson Inc., Sharp Electronics
Corporation and SunSoft, Inc. All are incorporating the technology into
their printer systems and software applications.

Bitstream's 4-in-1 product provides OEMs and ISVs with a complete font
scaling solution for operating systems, font servers, and printers. 4-in-1
has the power and flexibility to generate both bitmap and scaled outline
characters from all four industry standard font technologies: TrueType,
PostScript Type 1, HP PCLeo, and Bitstream Speedo. 4-in-1 is a modular
technology that recognizes which of the four standard formats is necessary
and rasterizes the font according to those specifications. It is an
easy-to-implement, fast, modular system that allows customers to choose
the combination of font renderers that best complement their product
strategy.

Bitstream emphasizes new technologies

Bitstream Inc.'s focus on OEM technologies better expresses the company's
forward momentum. "The emerging global communications market has problems
that we can help solve: font uniformity and universal document
portability. Bitstream is developing new solutions to meet today's
concerns and tomorrow's opportunities," said Ray Boelig, Bitstream
president and CEO. "Bitstream has made significant contributions as one of
the first and most successful companies to enter the digital font arena.
But fonts--no matter how expressive or well-designed--have become
commodities, so we have adapted and found new and more profitable ways to
leverage Bitstream's expertise and core technologies."

The company's move into electronic frontier technologies and future
document architectures will result in new OEM products and agreements to
be announced beginning in fall of this year. Bitstream intends to expand
its role as a provider of technology expertise and services to OEM and
corporate customers and continue to offer its rich library through the
reseller channel.

Most profitable quarter

Bitstream also announced today its most successful and profitable quarters,
Q2 (Jan-Mar) and Q3 (Apr-June) of fiscal year 1994, both in real dollars
and percentage of profit. All sales units are exceeding 100% of quotas,
including the OEM, end-user, distribution, corporate and international
groups. "We've successfully scaled back unnecessary channels while
continuing to support our reseller channel and current OEM partners, so we
are in a very strong position to forge ahead into new markets," said
Bitstream's director of sales and marketing, Jim Welch.

Bitstream appoints new vice president of sales and marketing

As of August 8th, John Seguin joins Bitstream as Vice President of Sales
and Marketing overseeing the sales efforts of all groups: Type Products,
OEM Technologies and Emerging Technologies. He will be working closely
with president and CEO, Ray Boelig in forming new vendor and OEM
partnerships and continuing product licensing.

Seguin brings a strong background in the sale and marketing of laser
printer and scanner solutions for the publishing, graphic arts and imaging
markets. As vice president of Howtek and later XLI Corporation, he piloted
highly-successful OEM, reseller, channel and strategic vendor partnership
programs contributing to significant revenue increases. He brings with him
excellent experience in strategic partnerships and thorough industry
knowledge. "John will be a powerful addition to our team. His professional
experience is exactly what we need to grow fully into our role as an OEM
technology provider. He will be a driving force in the future of Bitstream
Inc." says Boelig. Seguin holds a BS in Marketing from Southeastern
Massachusetts University.
