DCA's NEW GROUPWARE SOFTWARE, "OpenMind," PROVIDES A COLLABORATIVE
WORKSPACE FOR CONFERENCING, PUBLISHING AND DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

-- DCA Launches New Groupware Product Division --

August 1, 1994 -- ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Digital Communications Associates Inc.
(DCA) today announced "OpenMind," software that allows companies to set up
an easy-to-use, enterprise-wide information service to enable groups to
work together collaboratively to exchange ideas, share files, blend
internal data with external information and manage the enterprise's
knowledge resources.

Equipped with a powerful search engine, document management utility,
discussion database and intuitive graphical interface, OpenMind lets users
manage documents and discussions in a way that leverages the strength of
group collaboration.

In addition, DCA announced Todd Mavis, formerly vice president, strategic
accounts with Memorex Telex, Dallas, Texas, has joined the company as vice
president and general manager, groupware computing. As head of the DCA
Groupware Division, Mavis reports directly to James Lindner, DCA's
president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board.

"In the past the software industry has focused on providing access to data
and information, but leveraging 'knowledge assets' is the key strategic
focus of the future for most enterprises," said James Lindner. "DCA is
committed to providing solutions for our customers that enable them to
combine existing legacy and client/server information systems in ways that
help solve business problems.

"For over 20 years, DCA's software products have helped people who work in
groups increase their productivity. OpenMind takes it one step further by
helping businesses leverage their two most important 'knowledge assets'
-people and information systems -- to enhance the collaborative nature of
working in groups," Lindner said.

OpenMind, developed by DCA's Research Group using an "in-house" or private
information service model, was designed to meet the needs of knowledge
workers with common goals who need to communicate and collaborate in a
shared "electronic workspace." This model differs from the traditional
"push" model of electronic mail, where information is "pushed" back and
forth between users in a point-to-point manner, but never converges in one
shared workspace, according to Jeff Garbers, who led the engineering team
that created the new product. Garbers is also the creator of DCA's highly
popular Crosstalk communications software for accessing the Internet and
other on-line services and personal computers, using a modem.

OpenMind will support from tens to thousands of personal computer users of
all the popular local area networks (LANs), including those from Novell
and IBM. OpenMind is also for workers on a wide area network or those
remotely located who are dialing in to the network through a modem.
OpenMind is "plug and play," requiring no custom programming to set up and
use.

OpenMind's powerful client/server architecture allows the network to be
used very efficiently, providing effective remote connectivity that is
essential for an enterprise-wide system. A single server can support
hundreds of users or multiple servers can be connected to share
information, effectively tying together thousands of users.

At the heart of OpenMind is a powerful database which incorporates
technology from Microsoft, including the popular Windows NT platform which
is the base for OpenMind's client/server architecture. OpenMind will
support both Windows and Macintosh clients.

"DCA's OpenMind is an excellent example of an advanced client/server
application that takes full advantage of many of the features in Microsoft
Windows NT," said Rich Tong, general manager of the business systems
division, marketing, Microsoft Corporation. "By using Windows NT,
customers can deploy OpenMind in a small workgroup or pilot project and
then easily expand Windows NT to support thousand of OpenMind users."

Tong also said, "Large enterprises will benefit from the combined use of
OpenMind and Microsoft's groupware product, Microsoft Exchange Server,
which together offer a powerful groupware platform. We are also glad to
see DCA select OLE 2.0 to allow end-users and third parties to develop
applications quickly and easily that automatically exchange data between
OpenMind and external information services."

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources used a beta version of OpenMind
to resolve what Paul Burkhalter, director of the program Support Division
of the department described as "a logistical nightmare," pulling together
information from around the state to develop a long-range plan for the
$122 million, 2,000-employee agency.

"The OpenMind information tool provides us with a platform that has become
essential to this effort," says Burkhalter. "I don't know how we could do
what we are doing without it."

The Georgia state government agency manages all state parks, wildlife
resources, historical sites and coastal resources. In addition its
Environmental Protection Division is responsible for enforcement of both
state and federal laws and regulations for water quality, land use and
waste disposal. OpenMind not only enables planners to gather information
from 150 offices throughout the state and from industries and other
special interests affected by the department's activities, it provides a
vehicle for supporting LAN administrators in central and field offices.

Serving as a help desk resource, OpenMind enables LAN administrators to
share information with one another about various problems they have
encountered with hardware and software deployed on their LANs. "It's like
a cross between E-mail, CompuServe and a bulletin board service," says
David Benoist, DNR's computer network coordinator. "But even that doesn't
begin to describe the capabilities OpenMind brings to us. I really like
it. It's really a unique venue and we're going to try to get more and more
people on it."

OpenMind offers companies a cost-effective electronic publishing system. It
provides a central information space with a variety of notification and
retrieval tools that can be accessed by the entire enterprise. This space
also serves as a collaborative workspace for conferencing and group
documents.

OpenMind presents conversations in a transcript format, allowing users to
easily follow an entire conversation and understand what is being
discussed. In addition to group discussions, private discussions are also
possible between two or more selected individuals.

OpenMind also supports group document management, allowing groups of people
to develop and modify documents collaboratively. A lock-out feature
ensures only one person at a time can modify a document, while still
allowing others to read it. Versioning keeps track of each version of that
document, and its author, while keeping the original intact.

Full text search and retrieval is possible with OpenMind because any posted
information is automatically indexed, including discussions, documents
attached to messages, user information and documents in folders.
OpenMind's search devices can track a document by age, author, section or
other user-specified criteria.

DCA's OpenMind has been in beta test at the company since February. Over
500 users have participated from sites including the company's
headquarters outside Atlanta, development facilities and sales offices
ranging from San Jose, Calif., to Charlotte, NC., to New York, as well as
international offices in Europe.

OpenMind Windows client and server software will be available in September.
The suggested retail price ranges from $295 for a single client to $225
per client for 100 users or more. The OpenMind Windows server will be
available for $995. The OpenMind Starter Kit includes one server and five
clients and is priced at $995. OpenMind will be available through
qualified value added resellers and DCA's corporate sales force. A
Macintosh client will be available in October.

Located in metro Atlanta with offices worldwide, DCA is the worldwide
