PHILIPS LMS JOINS AVAIL COMPATIBILITY PROGRAM

Philips family of optical drives are compatible with Avail's NetSpace HSM
software.

Boulder, Colorado - September 8, 1994 - Avail Systems Corporation today
announced Philips Laser Magnetic Storage (Philips LMS) now supports the
Avail ABLE compatibility program connecting the Philips LMS 4000 series
12-inch Optical drives to Avail's NetSpace hierarchical storage management
(HSM) software. The Avail developed storage capacity kits guarantee plug
and play compatibility of the Philips LMS L74100 5.6 GB drive, LF4500 28
GB RapidChanger, and the LF4502 56 GB RapidChanger with Avail NetSpace
installations.

"Avail welcomes the world's leading supplier of optical drive technology
into our Avail ABLE compatible device program," said Otto Ritter, NetSpace
product director for Avail Systems. "High performance optical storage is a
key component integrators need in building well designed storage systems
for networks. Philips LMS 12 inch optical products, when managed by our
NetSpace software, provide customers unparalleled storage solutions."

The Avail compatibility program provides storage device manufacturers,
system integrators and end user customers the simplest method to build and
maintain storage management systems using standard, plug and play
components. Storage hardware vendors indicate the unit is "Avail ABLE" on
the packaging and product documentation. Any Avail ABLE storage device
used with a storage kit can instantly add capacity to an existing NetSpace
environment, or can be configured with other Avail ABLE devices to form a
hierarchy that can be managed by NetSpace. Integrators and users are
assured that storage equipment bearing the Avail ABLE logo will operate
with all applications containing the NetSpace HSM engine.

Compelled by the simplicity of the program and the benefits for their
customers, many leading storage hardware vendors have adopted the Avail
compatibility strategy in marketing their products. Philips LMS joins HP,
Digital Equipment Corporation, Maxoptix, and ADIC in carrying the Avail
certification.

"Philips LMS compatibility strategy is a natural fit with the Avail ABLE
program," said Sam Green, optical product marketing manager for Philips
LMS. "By supporting the Avail storage kit software, Philips LMS assures
our customers simple integration of the 4000 series drives into a NetSpace
storage hierarchy. Together, Philips LMS and Avail provide an outstanding
solution for managing network storage."

Philips LMS optical products own over 36% of the worldwide marketshare with
over 15,000 12-inch drive installations at end user sites. Philips LMS
pioneered the dual head optical technology used in their 4000 series
drives that provides random access to both sides of an optical media and
superior performance. Dual head technology eliminates the time other
systems need to spin-down, eject, flip and spin up a platter to get to
side two. As a result, fully 20% of the data stored on a Philips LMS Rapid
Changer optical drive is available for immediate access, the highest
on-line capacity in the industry.

Philips Laser Magnetic Storage, a Philips Electronics North America
Company, is the market leader in high performance U.S. manufactured
storage products. It develops, manufactures, and markets mass storage 12"
optical and tape, CD-Recorder and CDROM products worldwide. Philips Laser
Magnetic Storage is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Hierarchical storage management software solves the problems caused by the
explosion of file data on today's PC networks. Avail's NetSpace HSM
product provides expert, rule based procedures that automatically store
all networked data on "layers" of storage peripherals. Files are migrated
to various storage devices (such as disk drives, optical jukeboxes, and
tape libraries) to optimize both the cost of storage and data access time.
Files are transparently migrated and retrieved for the network user at a
fraction of the cost of adding traditional network storage.

Avail was the first company to develop hierarchical storage management
software for Novell networks. Since the product's introduction in
July,1993, Avail's software has received many accolades, including
Computer Technology Review's Reseller's Choice award and industry honors
for technical excellence and outstanding new storage product. Avail
Systems Corporation, founded in 1991, is a privately held corporation
whose investors are Aweida Ventures, Euclid Partners, and Hambrecht &
Quist.
