SOFTWARE PUBLISHING UNVEILS HARVARD CHARTXL

Offers Sophisticated Business, Statistical, and Technical Charting and Data
Analysis Capabilities for Windows Users

SANTA CLARA, Calif., September 12, 1994 -- Software Publishing Corporation
today unveiled and announced the availability of Harvard ChartXL, a
sophisticated Windows data charting application that enables users to
visually analyze and communicate their spreadsheet data more effectively.
The product offers 183 unique two- and three-dimensional business,
financial, statistical and technical chart types, coupled with powerful
mathematical capabilities and "what-if" analysis tools. Harvard ChartXL,
recently named a Microsoftr Office Compatible product by Microsoft
Corporation, integrates with existing Windows applications, including
spreadsheets, word processors, page layout and presentation graphics
programs.

"Harvard ChartXL is a very impressive product. It provides me with the
tools I need to chart complex sets of data and then analyze trends
visually -- instead of in columns and rows," said Richard Schoenthaler, a
treasury analyst at a Fortune 500 chemical manufacturer. "I'm especially
impressed with how well Harvard ChartXL works with my Lotus 1-2-3
spreadsheets. For example, I imported 2,500 rows of data, three columns
wide, and it worked flawlessly." Harvard ChartXL is designed for business,
financial, statistical and technical professionals who use spreadsheets
frequently. These users have an in-depth understanding of their data and
are looking for a way to render it more effectively for both analysis and
communication to others.

"We found that as more complex data reaches the desktop, users are looking
for new tools to help them visually analyze and present information, yet
current product offerings are either limited in chart types or too hard to
use" said Irfan Salim, president and chief executive officer of Software
Publishing Corporation. "With Harvard ChartXL, we are providing users with
a unique solution that offers a vast array of chart types, many of which
are not available in other packages, along with powerful analysis tools
and state-of-the-art usability, based on the award-winning Harvard
GraphicsO Advisor? system."

Harvard ChartXL provides users with 183 two- and three-dimensional chart
types in three categories: Business, Statistical, and Technical. Business
users can select from 78 chart types, including bubble plots, group maps,
gantt charts, column charts, spider plots and ribbon charts, as well as
traditional pie, bar, area, table and line charts. For stock analysis, the
product also offers a selection of hi/lo/close and candlestick charts. For
conveying statistical data, such as distribution or correlation studies,
Harvard ChartXL offers 48 unique chart types, including box-whisker plots,
error-bar plots, histograms, pareto charts, and scatter plots. Many of the
statistical charts automatically calculate data and generate a final
chart. For example, the error-bar plot calculates not only standard error
or deviation, but also minimum, maximum, and mean.

Users who need to chart technical data, such as scientists and engineers,
can choose from 57 specific chart types. For example, the product offers
contour and spectral plots for mapping topographical data, Smith charts
for electromagnetics, and vector plots for fluid flow analysis. Other
technical chart types include polar, surface, trajectory, and X-Y plots.

Harvard ChartXL is designed to complement users' existing Windows
applications, such as spreadsheets, word processors, page layout and
presentation programs. For example, users can generate a chart based on
data from any of the leading Windows spreadsheet packages. The product
directly supports files created in Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3. Other
data sources are supported through OLE and DDE. Once a chart has been
created, users can either print it as a stand-alone graphic, or use OLE to
embed their image as a charting object in a report or presentation.

Harvard ChartXL provides users with a powerful built-in spreadsheet and 3-D
"what-if" analysis tools. The product's 70-trillion-cell spreadsheet
offers more than 50 mathematical calculations and statistical functions.
Users can add their own equations for instant "what-if" analysis of key
variables using the Formula Solver. A data cursor also lets users conduct
what-if analysis on-the-fly by simply selecting a data point on a chart
and dragging it to the desired new point on the axis while maintaining a
link to the live data.

In addition to providing powerful data rendering and analysis capabilities,
Harvard ChartXL also offers users control over every visual aspect of
their chart. Simple mouse clicks enable users to add axes, including
multiple X, Y, and Z axes, and broken axes; change line styles; fit
curves; or change scales. Users can also select from a variety of drawing
tools from a floating palette. Final touches include the ability to apply
a light source for dramatic shading, and rotate charts for a 360 degree
perspective.

Helping Chart Success Along the Way

In order to help users select the most appropriate chart type for their
data, Harvard ChartXL includes a Graph Gallery Advisor which offers a
brief description of each chart, as well as information on effective
usage. For example, the Advisor suggests using a spider plot for
proportional comparisons, and a bubble plot for comparative positioning.
The Graph Gallery Advisor is similar to the Quick Advice offered in
Harvard Graphics.

Harvard ChartXL also supports a tab metaphor as part of its overall
interface design. The folder-style tabs help make users more productive by
displaying only the icons and options that relate to a particular task at
hand.

Harvard ChartXL is widely available today for a suggested retail price of
$149. Users of competitive charting packages, including DeltaGraph,
Origin, SigmaPlot, and Stanford Chart can upgrade for $99. The product
offers a 90-day money-back guarantee, and 30 days of free technical
support (from the first call).

Harvard ChartXL requires a 386 or higher IBM-PC or compatible; 4 MB of RAM;
5 MB hard disk space (for minimum install); 16-color EGA or higher
display; DOS 5.0 or higher and Windows 3.1. The recommended system
requirements include 8 MB of RAM, 14 MB of hard disk space, and a math
coprocessor compatible with Intel 80287 or 80387.
