$1 BILLION NAVY CAD CONTRACTS TO INCLUDE COMPUTERIZED ENGINEERING
HANDBOOKS

(Mahwah, New Jersey -- August 25, 1994) The NAVSEA, NAFAC and NAVAIR
contracts are intended to equip Navy personnel with the latest and most
sophisticated computer-aided design equipment. Since the contracts extend
for many years, all make provisions for technology upgrades that insure
that only state-of-the-art hardware and software are provided. An
interesting aspect of this emphasis on technology is the demand by the
Navy for a tool that insures that engineers maintain their understanding
of the fundamental engineering principles. This concern, which is becoming
known in the engineering community as the "back to basics" movement, is
designed to insure that regardless of the sophistication of the tools that
they are using, engineers remain aware of the basic laws of nature which
lie at the root of all engineering calculations. Of course, the Navy
doesn't want its engineers to become mathematicians so they have asked
bidders to include engineering tools which incorporate solutions to
structural/mechanical engineering applications found in many reference
books in their bids. A product that meets this requirement and was
specified in all three of the Navy contracts (NAVSEA, NAVFAC and NAVAIR)
is DE/CAASE.

DE/CAASE, developed by Desktop Engineering, represents the worlds largest
known compilation of solutions to structural/mechanical engineering
applications. It greatly reduces the time required to solve engineering
problems by helping the user select the proper solution, prompting for the
required input, automatically solving the equations and providing
graphical illustrations. The program incorporates solutions to over 5000
structural/mechanical engineering applications for calculating force,
deflection, stress and geometric properties. These solutions have been
rigorously researched from over 100 reference books, representing the
result of theoretical efforts by recognized experts of the engineering
profession, and have been independently verified. It includes over 40
modules grouped into categories including Geometric and Material
Properties; Beams and Columns; Rings, Arches and Frames; Plates, Shells,
Grillages and Pressure Vessels; Natural Frequencies and Dynamics,
Stresses, Cables and Springs; and more. The release of Version 4.1
provides a completely new graphical user interface that operates in a
Windows environment on UNIX and MS-DOS operating systems.

These Navy contracts represent one of the largest architectural engineering
and geographic information systems CAD acquisitions ever undertaken and is
valued at over $1 billion. Both Department of Defense and civilian
agencies world-wide can order the contract's products and services.
