EXABYTE ANNOUNCES BETA SHIPMENTS OF BREAKTHROUGH 2 GIGABYTE MINICARTRIDGE
DRIVE

ATLANTA, Ga., Sept. 12, 1994 -- Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT) announced that
Beta shipments of the EXB-2502 Quarter-Inch Cartridge Tape Subsystem began
last month. Volume shipments will occur next quarter. The EXB-2502 stores
2 gigabytes of data in native mode, and 4 gigabytes with optional hardware
compression.

In addition to its high capacity, the EXB-2502 offers a fast transfer rate.
At 505 kilobytes per second, the EXB-2502 can transfer 2 gigabytes of data
in approximately one hour. With compression, the transfer rate increases
to 1 megabyte per second. The EXB-2502c, a version of the drive with
built-in hardware compression, will be available first-quarter 1995.

"The EXB-2502 represents a capacity breakthrough in the quarter-inch
minicartridge market," said Peter D. Behrendt, Exabyte's chairman of the
board, president and chief executive officer. "It provides the
quarter-inch marketplace with the perfect formula of high capacity, fast
transfer rate, unique features and low cost in an industry standard
3.5-inch form factor."

The EXB-2502 offers read-after-write capabilities which increase data
integrity and eliminate the need for pre-formatted tapes. Additionally,
the EXB-2502's read-after-write capabilities eliminate the need for data
verify passes, cutting network downtime in half during daily backup.

Incorporating proprietary techniques that do not compromise tape format,
the EXB-2502 is capable of searching any file on tape within 50 seconds.

The EXB-2502 is designed for integration into low-end networks,
workstations and high-end desktop PCs that support data-intensive
applications. Its advanced features include serial port diagnostic testing
and microcode that can be field upgraded with the use of tape, SCSI or
serial interface.

The EXB-2502 operates from an embedded SCSI-2 (QIC-121) interface and
features Reed-Solomon Error Correction Coding. The drive offers high
reliability of 200,000 hours mean time between failure and a bit error
rate of less than one in every 10**15 bits read. As with Exabyte's entire
line of 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch drives, the EXB-2502 features rugged,
quality construction, making it ideal for demanding computing
environments.

The drive's original equipment manufacturer price (quantity 1,000) is
approximately $525 (U.S.)

The EXB-2502 reads the industry standard format QIC-3050-MC developed for
Exabyte's initial quarter inch product, the EXB-2501. The EXB-2502 format
is also compatible with the QIC standard 3110-MC.

The EXB-2502 achieves its high capacity by using MC3100 quarter-inch
minicartridges, a new Barium Ferrite media for quarter-inch drives. With
this media, the EXB-2502 reaches densities in excess of 70,000 FRPI.
Exabyte will market this new tape technology under the Exabyte brand name
EXATAPE. The cartridges also will be marketed by 3M under its private
label.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
markets a full range of tape storage products: 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch
minicartridge tape drives, tape libraries and recording media The world's
largest independent manufacturer focused solely on tape products, Exabyte
ships its products through a network of original equipment manufacturers,
value-added resellers and distributors.
