Raima Customers Are Praising Velocis

A new level of database flexibility and performance at work

Issaquah, Wash. -- August 18, 1994 -- Raima's new generation SQL database
engine Velocis, designed for Client/Server application development, is
enjoying an impressive level of success with early users. Just released in
March 1994, Velocis (formerly Raima Database Server) provides the next
generation level of features and technology, specifically designed to
bring high performance and ease the challenges of client/server database
application development and deployment.

Velocis is an embedable high performance, client/server database engine
that provides high through-put transaction processing, support for
multiple API's and compliance with industry standards including ANSI SQL,
Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), and SQL Access Group Call
Level Interface (SAG CLI). Important features include declarative
referential integrity, fault tolerance, transaction processing to assure
data integrity and safety, and very high performance. Its performance is
enhanced because of several features including the ability to create
Extension Modules, a query optimizer, and a CREATE JOIN DDL statement that
allows the creation of direct relationships between multiple tables.
Velocis also includes MS-Windows system performance and database
administration utilities.

MEI Computer Consultants of Montreal, Quebec has developed a client/server
sales force automation system called MEI+. Windows workstations access a
Velocis Netware NLM or OS/2 server and remote laptops use standalone
Velocis for Windows. Through the use of Velocis Extension Modules, special
data intensive algorithms reside on the server for dramatic performance
increases. However, to the user, running MEI+ fro m the laptop or server
is identical. "It's better than Lotus Notes, because a real client/server
DBMS is underneath the application. Given our database intensive
application, Velocis is the only database that delivers the performance,
flexibility, reliability, and portability we need. No other database comes
close to meeting our requirements." said Michel Charbonneau, Senior
Development Manager for MEI. MEI has signed an agreement with Raima and
projects shipping over 2400 units of Velocis as part of the MEI+ product
solution over the next 18 months.

In developing real-time client/server applications, it is quite often
difficult to apply off-the-shelf database software. Velocis allowed
William D. "Diggy" Bell to apply Raima's client/server database engine to
a large ($200M) automation project and achieve performance that was
impossible to obtain with any other database product. "The multiple levels
of API are invaluable in the application of this technology. We were able
to utilize ANSI standard SQL for reporting and user interface
applications. To satisfy our real-time needs, we developed an ultra
high-speed Velocis Extension Module that gave us transaction rates as high
as 2000 transactions per minute. This performance was obtained using
Velocis on a NetFRAME NF250FT (Intel 486/50) server. In addition, 20 OS/2
PC's, averaging 40 threads each, were sustained on a 24 hour basis. With
the availability of higher speed hardware platforms, the performance would
far surpass the needs of even the most critical user!" said Diggy Bell,
Principal with DB Software Development.

WordPerfect Corporation of Orem, UT has developed a technical support
system using Velocis. The application is designed to manage second and
third tier problems and enhancement requests. WordPerfect's MIS staff
easily converted their Raima Database Manager system to use Velocis and
take advantage of the benefits that Velocis Extension Modules provide.
"Conversion and development of the database was extremely quick and easy,
making Velocis a joy to use. For a first revision product, Velocis is
surprisingly clean and solid." said Gary Watts, Internal Applications
Staff at WordPerfect. Gary has seen as many as 136 simultaneous users on a
Novell Network with no problems and is confident it can handle their
potential of 600 users. "I developed an extension module that makes the
data scream on the server, in addition to keeping network overhead
extremely minimal. With one function call to the server I can process
lists of records from multiple tables and then return the results to the
calling client, using only a few Netware packets." explains Mr. Watts.
Transactions per second have gone as high as 60+ with no problem on a
Compaq DeskPro 486/66 M.
