BlueWater To Offer Advanced Real-Time Development Tool Kit that Supports
Microsoft's New Operating System "Chicago"

Device driver tool kit enables cross-developing "Chicago" Win32
applications under Windows NT.

(Edmonds, WA) -- The newly announced "WinRT Tool Kit" from BlueWater
Systems will provide the first and fastest way for programmers to develop
Win32 real-time applications for Microsoft's next generation operating
system, "Chicago", even while remaining compatible with Windows NT.

The heart of the WinRT Tool Kit is the WinRT Device Driver, which will be
supplied in both Windows NT and Chicago versions, making the Win32
programs which use the tool kit binary compatible across NT and Chicago In
contrast, the kernels of Chicago and Windows NT are significantly
different and employ different device driver models, which will generally
make Chicago device drivers incompatible with those that have been
developed for NT.

The availability of the WinRT Tool Kit for developing Win32 applications
under Windows NT today, and its compatibility with the future WinRT Tool
Kit for Chicago, enables developers to produce device interfaces for both
Chicago and NT systems. These interfaces can be tightly coupled to
directly access port I/O, memory I/O, and interrupts, all without waiting
for Microsoft to complete Chicago. In addition to getting a head start on
development, a second advantage of WinRT is that developers are able to
avoid the complexities and learning time delays associated with the
Windows NT Device Driver Kit (the NT DDK) and the Chicago DDK. A third
advantage of WinRT is that developers do not have to maintain two
different versions of their code.

Typical usage of the WinRT Tool Kit includes connecting unsupported
peripherals and custom hardware (such as data acquisition cards, I/O
interfaces and prototype hardware).

"We'll put developers of Chicago hardware control applications months ahead
of their most optimistic plans by providing cross-development of real-time
device interfaces under Microsoft Windows NT," says Paul Lever, President
of BlueWater Systems. "Because it requires far less hardware, we expect
the Chicago market to be much larger than the Windows NT market." Mr.
Lever earlier stated, "Instead of requiring developers to learn 250+ API
calls like the Microsoft NT DDK requires, a user of BlueWater's WinRT can
quickly write tightly coupled device drivers [for Windows NT and Chicago]
requiring only 3 API calls". The WinRT Tool Kit further eases its already
short learning curve by providing templates for developing real-time
threads and connecting them to Visual Basic, Visual C++ and other
programming languages.

The WinRT Tool Kit is priced at $595 for single users with six months of
technical support and is available for immediate shipment. Users of WinRT
for Windows NT will be able to upgrade to the Chicago version for a
reduced price. WinRT includes: the WinRT Device Driver with royalty free
runtime, the WinRT preprocessor, DOS simulator, the NT Registry editor,
extensive samples, and support. The Chicago version is scheduled to ship
with Microsoft's official release of Chicago.
