Zenith Data Systems Announces Quad Processor Server

Z-SERVER GT Upgradable to Four 90Mhz Pentiums, 1 GB Memory and 24 GB
Storage

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. -- September 12, 1994 -- Zenith Data Systems announced
today the availability of its latest high-end server: the Z-SERVER GT
Series. The GT servers, based on Intel's MPS 1.1 multi-processing
specification, feature four symmetrical multi-processors using the Intel
90Mhz Pentium. The Z-SERVER GT can be configured or upgraded for one, two,
three or four Pentiums. Maximum RAM installable on the GT is over 1 GB;
maximum disk storage is 24 GB.

"The Z-SERVER GT offers superior price-performance and upgradability," said
David O'Connor, Executive Vice President of ZDS' Worldwide Product Group.
"This high-performance server is ideal for mission-critical applications
which demand multi-processing power and high availability."

Multi-processor Performance

In a symmetrical multi-processing architecture, as CPU demands increase the
system architecture automatically balances CPU requests across the
multiple processors. Heavy traffic on the MP server is distributed across
processors, alleviating bottlenecks and performance degradation seen in
single processor file servers.

The Z-SERVER GT is the perfect platform for applications requiring true
multi-processing performance such as mission-critical databases and
communications servers. Because the GT series is based on Intel's MPS 1.1
specification, any MP compatible operating system or application is
suitable for the GT. Current MP operating systems which are supported
include SCO MP and Windows NT. As other multi-processing systems become
available, customers are assured compatibility with the ZDS Z-SERVER GT.

Multi-bus Architecture

The Z-SERVER GT is one of the most competitively priced, high-performance
multiprocessor servers available today. ZDS is able to deliver this
superior price/performance combination with the development of its
multi-bus architecture for the GT. "Subsystems are often the bottleneck
for performance," said Brian Croxon, Vice President for the Server
Business Unit at ZDS. "By custom designing how subsystem buses integrate
with the CPU we were able to increase overall system performance without
adding significantly to the cost of the system." The ZDS multi-bus design
integrates EISA, SCSI and PCI.

High Availability, Fault Tolerance

The Z-SERVER GT maximizes availability and 24-hour operation with a series
of fault tolerant features and comprehensive service and support. The GT
has ECC memory, hot plug disk drives, proactive server management and RAID
1 and 5 support with its optional dual channel RAID controller. All ZDS
Z-SERVER products are covered by a 3-year limited on-site warranty.

Main System Board Specifications

The Z-SERVER GT motherboard contains the following features:

* Three open EISA bus master slots
* Two open PCI bus master slots
* One open PCI/EISA bus master slot
* Dual SCSI-2 fast/wide controller on board
* VGA graphics (1024x768 w/256 colors)
  with VESA feature connector
* FLASH upgradable BIOS
* Floppy controller
* Two serial, one parallel, mouse and keyboard ports

Upgradability

The Z-SERVER GT, through its on-board SCSI, PCI and EISA, is field
upgradable with any number of standard storage devices and peripherals.
The GT's processor complex may be upgraded with up to four 90Mhz Pentiums.
Memory can be expanded to 1 GB. The chassis has six 3.5 inch drive bays,
easily configured for RAID. An Additional four 5.25 inch bays are also
free for other hard drives or backup devices such as tape units, optical
discs or other removable media.

Pricing and Availability

The Z-SERVER GT will be widely available from all Zenith Data Systems
distributors, resellers and field sales account managers by November,
1994. Pricing for the Z-SERVER GT begins around $14,000. Resellers
determine their own pricing, which may be higher or lower than ZDS'
price.
