Canon Announces Support For PowerPC Standard

IBM AND CANON FORGE RELATIONSHIP CENTERED ON POWERPC-BASED SYSTEMS AND
PRODUCTS

NEW YORK, Feb. 22 . . . IBM Power Personal Systems Division today announced
that it has formed a relationship with Canon, Inc. centered around PowerPC
microprocessor-based systems and products. PowerPC is a family of
high-performance microprocessors based on IBM's advanced RISC (Reduced
Instruction Set Computing) technology.

The IBM and Canon relationship has four components:

** Canon has endorsed the PowerPC Reference Platform*, a design
specification available to the industry for building PowerPC-based
products, and will promote PowerPC as a strategic direction for its
computer and office products.

** Canon will join IBM and Motorola in the continuing definition and
evolution of the PowerPC Reference Platform. IBM Power Personal Systems
Division and Canon intend to work to extend the definition of the PowerPC
Reference Platform to consumer-oriented computer products such as
subnotebooks, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and office products.

** IBM Power Personal Systems Division will provide Canon with a range of
materials and assistance that may include design support, system
components and system products based on the PowerPC microprocessor.

** IBM and Canon intend to pursue joint development and mutual OEM
opportunities that would make the best use of each company's technology
strengths.

"This relationship will capitalize on Canon's leadership in office products
and color digital imaging technologies," said Nobuo Mii, IBM vice
president and general manager, IBM Power Personal Systems Division.

"The superior processing capabilities of the PowerPC microprocessor
significantly enhance Canon's participation in the personal computing
market," said Hiroshi Tanaka, executive vice president, Canon, Inc.

The PowerPC Reference Platform defines an open, nonproprietary architecture
-- a framework composed of technical concepts and definitions, functional
specifications and interfaces that take advantage of the inherent power of
the PowerPC microprocessors. The specifications are being made available
to other companies so they can create their own unique PowerPC-based
products, while enabling software compatibility.
