EIGHTEEN INDEPENDENT SOFTWARE PUBLISHERS SIGN UP FOR IBM's CD-ROM SOFTWARE
DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM

Microsoft, WordPerfect and Lotus are among companies to support IBM's
distribution and marketing program

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 14, 1994 . . . IBM today announced that 18
software publishers, including Microsoft Corporation, WordPerfect
Corporation and Lotus Development Corporation, will make their products
available for CD-ROMs distributed through IBM's CD Showcase software
distribution and marketing program.

With CD Showcase's "try and buy" capabilities, consumers can view and test
multiple software titles from their business- or home-based PCs. They can
instantly license a software application by calling a toll-free number to
receive a code that unlocks and installs the desired program.

For resellers, CD Showcase is a marketing tool that allows them to develop
disks tailored to their own specific markets. For example, if the reseller
has a large customer base of accounting firms, it can offer a CD
containing popular accounting programs. For the home market, resellers can
develop a CD featuring a selection of educational applications and games.

Software publishers benefit because CD Showcase offers opportunities for
low-cost incremental sales. In addition, CD-ROM software distribution can
boost profits because it cuts software production costs such as packaging,
hard-copy documentation and duplication of floppy disks.

"CD-ROM software distribution is revolutionizing software marketing because
now customers will have the option to experience a software product at
their desktops, then license it via telephone and instantly install it --
all from the convenience of their home or office," says Michael Rhamy,
group manager, Channel Policies Group, Microsoft Corporation.

CD Showcase also helps software publishers to better understand and market
to their target customer sets.

"Registration rates can dramatically increase with a program like CD
Showcase," says Guy Pribyl, senior account manager, OEM relations at
WordPerfect. "Now we can electronically capture registration data the
moment a user unlocks a title."

A significant feature of CD Showcase is that it follows the traditional
software business model. Steve O'Neill, director of OEM sales, Lotus
Development Corporation, says, "An important advantage of IBM's program is
that it works through the existing reseller channel structure so we don't
have to alter the way we do business."

In summarizing the program's appeal, Michael P. Kiyosaki, director of
marketing, IBM Software Manufacturing, says, "When you put multiple
software products and demos on one 'try and buy' disk, you have to balance
the customer needs for product variety and instant accessibility with the
concerns of software publishers and resellers for protecting products and
business relationships. Many of the world's leading software publishers
are participating in CD Showcase which we believe affirms its strategy
both as a marketing and distribution tool and as a sensible business
model. Today there are over 300 leading products available in the program,
and we're continually adding popular products to the CD Showcase
'family.'"

In addition to Lotus, Microsoft and WordPerfect, software companies
currently participating are:

- Ace Software Corp
- Adobe Systems, Inc
- Aristosoft, Inc.
- Azalea Software, Inc.
- Borland International, Inc.
- Computer Associates International, Inc.
