Phyla Nears Release
Pre-Release Demo Packs Distributed

San Jose, CA, March 15, 1994--Mainstay distributed pre-release demo packs
of Phyla, the first end-user object-oriented database, today at the
Business Software Solutions/Software Development show here. With these
demo packs, Macintosh users can see for themselves the power of
object-orientation in an easy-to-use database.

Phyla marks the first time the power of an OODBMS (object-oriented database
management system) has been presented in an off-the-shelf solution
accessible by the average computer user. Although based upon
object-oriented technology, Phyla does not require any specific knowledge
about object technology nor is any programming required. Phyla is
immediately usable by anyone with basic spreadsheet or flat-file database
experience.

Using objects and object classes that correspond to everyday items like an
invoice, an employee or a piece of equipment, Phyla models complex
real-world situations easily. Powerful and intuitive relationships between
classes of objects can be created between classes by simply drawing a line
and naming the relation. Phyla's ease of use, combined with the power and
flexibility of the object-oriented structure, makes it the first tool
available for end users to model complex data relationships without
programming.

Unlike flat-file databases with their limited functionality, or relational
databases with their complex programming needs, Phyla is instantly
powerful and extremely expressive, due to the natural organization and
relation of classes and objects.

Calculations are based on constraint expressions similar to those used in a
spreadsheet or flat-file database.

Phyla's object orientation provides the flexibility to work in both an
outline view, showing related objects, and within the context of
custom-designed forms. Comprehensive changes can be made at any time, and
objects can be related by simply dragging-and-dropping them onto an object
from another related class. Objects created in relational context are
automatically related. Objects of related classes can also be
automatically related by constraint expressions. Multiple objects can be
viewed at the same time. Or objects like invoices can be viewed in several
windows at the same time--once sorted by date, once by amount due, once by
vendor name. A change in any display is reflected in all other displays.

Using Phyla, an employee roster, a building layout, a project list, and a
list of computers can be viewed as a dynamic staffing and location plan,
or a project manpower plan, or an electric power requirements diagram, or
a capital equipment location and amortization report, or a materials
allocation plan, or an electricity usage list--or all of these.

"For the first time, there is a powerful and intuitive way to handle the
increasing complexity of everyday business. Macintosh users will find
Phyla to be an essential tool for their database needs," says Mainstay
president Tom Nalevanko.

The name, Phyla, is the plural of the word phylum, a broad grouping or
classification most often used in biology as the principal division of the
animal kingdom (phylum, class, order, family, genus, species). It comes
from the Greek word meaning tribe. The name Phyla suggests the concepts of
related objects grouped in classes.

Phyla will be available through retail channels in the second quarter of
1994. The suggested introductory retail price is $495.
