POET SOFTWARE'S OBJECT DATABASE NOW AVAILABLE ON MACINTOSH, OS/2 AND AIX
PLATFORMS

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 14,1994 -- POET Software Corporation announced, at
the Software Development/94 and Business Software Solutions conference
here, that it has completed ports of its object database system, POET, to
three more desktop and workstation platforms. Two new ports make POET
Version 2.1 available on Macintosh and IBM AIX. POET's update from Version
2.0 to Version 2.1 (announced in December 1993), provides support for OS/2
2.1.

POET is an object-oriented database system designed for C++ application
development in homogeneous and heterogeneous environments. It is available
in a single-user version (POET Personal Edition) and for multi-user
applications (POET Professional Edition) including those for team-based
and workgroup engineering.

With Version 2.1, POET introduced significant functionality and performance
enhancements specifically designed to heighten the product's desktop and
workstation applicability. New features included an improved database
definition language, overall performance improvements, faster low-level
file I/O, simplified database administration tools and an online help
system.
Release of POET 2.1 also set new standards of portability and
interoperability for object database systems. Including the new ports, the
software is now available on 12 different operating systems, and supports
all major C++ compilers.

In addition to Macintosh, AIX and OS/2, POET is the only database currently
available on the latest versions of Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups,
Windows NT, SGI Irix, NeXTStep, Sun Solaris, Sun OS, SCO Unix and Novell
Netware.

"The completion of these latest ports is a major milestone in bringing
object database technology to the desktop," said Dirk Bartels, POET
president and founder. "With POET now supporting Macintosh, AIX, OS/2 and
the existing Windows and Novell Netware versions, more PC-based developers
can work in their preferred environment and can move their applications
from one platform to another. Equally important, development organizations
have a database system that virtually guarantees application portability
and interoperability."

* For Macintosh System 7.1, POET accommodates Apple's new MPW 3.3 C++
compiler and the Symantec C++ compiler, and provides transparent access to
all available POET server systems. "Its support of binary compatible file
formats is especially important to developers of cross-platform
applications," Bartels said. "As a result, database files can be used --
without conversion -- from all available POET systems, whether they're
Intel on Windows or AIX on the PowerPC". Communication is based on
TCP/IP.

Mac support is enhanced with the new workgroup capabilities in POET Version
2.1. These include an event notification facility for Mac and Windows
clients, which enables developers to write event-driven workgroup
applications across operating system boundaries.

POET Personal Edition for Macintosh is available at an introductory price
of $299.00 ($499. after April 30, 1994). The Professional Edition software
development kit (SDK) is priced at $999.00. The client can be used with
any other POET server (e.g., Novell Netware, IBM AIX, Windows for
Workgroups or Sun OS).

* For OS/2 2.1., POET is available on the Personal Edition at an
introductory price of $299.00 ($499.00 after April 30, 1994), and on the
Professional Edition for $999.00. POET's OS/2 clients can be used with any
other POET server (e.g., Novell Netware, IBM AIX, Windows for Workgroups
or Sun OS). The communication protocol is either Novell's Lan Workplace
for OS/2 2.1 or IBM TCP/IP. POET for OS/2 also uses the IBMCSet++ C++
compiler, release 2.x.

OS/2 developers also benefit from POET's heterogeneous network support.
OS/2 clients can access POET database servers simultaneously with POET
clients running on Windows, Macintosh or various Unix computers. POET
ensures transparent mapping of binary-to-native OS/2 formats while also
managing all event-handling processes.

* For AIX, POET supports the most popular new servers (e.g., PowerPC Model
250 running AIX 3.2.5) as well as the IBM XLC compiler version 1.02. On
AIX, POET can also simultaneously support all available client systems. It
handles multi-user access and transparent transformation of the different
processors' binary formats.

AIX on the POET Personal Edition is priced at $ 1,495.00 until April 30,
1994 ($1,950.00 thereafter). Users interested in the Professional Edition
can take advantage of a one-month evaluation license at the price of the
AIX Personal Edition. Beyond that period, a one-to-four developer license
is $9950.00.
