Capacity Planning and Performance Modeling

Englewood Cliffs NJ February 28 1994 -- Capacity planning is an important
part of systems analysis You need to be able to predict the future
performance of your system under different scenarios and parameters.
Capacity Planning and Performance Modeling: A Practical Approach by Daniel
A. Menasce, Virgilio A. F. Almeida and Lawrence W. Dowdy is the first
example-driven guide for professionals involved in capacity planning
performance analysis and system management.

Software professionals must be able to adequately size and tune computer
systems from mainframes to client-server systems. Capacity Planning and
Performance Modeling presents models and techniques for capacity planning
and performance in an intuitive manner. Applications of the models covered
in the book range from mainframes to client-server systems. Topics covered
include data collection techniques for performance modeling software
performance engineering models of complex I/O systems and virtual memory
systems models of client-server systems and performance model validation
and calibration.

Capacity Planning and Performance Modeling takes a unique scientific
approach to capacity planning. Examples illustrate each concept introduced
throughout the book. Each chapter presents a motivating problem then it
explores solution using principles and intuition. Then theory for the
situation is used to generalize a solution and the original problem is
revisited.

The book is accompanied by a disk containing source code for programs that
solve queuing networks. An educational version of a complete capacity
planning package is also included on the disk. The disk contains the
source code for a Pascal solution technique tool. The programs can be used
to solve multiple class open and closed queuing networks with load
dependent servers An executable version of a PC-based capacity planning
software package, QSolver/1, is also provided on the disk.

About the Authors ...

Professor Menasce has been a consultant in capacity planning for over ten
years Among the companies he consulted for are Interamerican Development
Bank, Citibank, Ashton-Tate, Lotus, the Brazilian Social Security Data
Processing Company, the Brazilian Government Data Processing Bureau, and
the Brazilian Research Council. Dr Menasce has taught many capacity
planning courses and seminars for private companies and organizations such
as the ACM DC chapter. He is widely published in his field. His major
areas of interest are performance prediction modeling, capacity planning,
modeling of parallel applications and parallel architectures and
distributed system modeling.

Professor Almeida is a computer consultant and educator His consulting
activities include working for IBM Latin America in the supercomputing
area and capacity planning studies for the Japanese Brazilian Paper
Company and the Brazilian Social Security Data Processing Company. He is
widely published in his field. His areas of interest include performance
modeling, capacity planning, supercomputer architecture, and
multiprocessor system modeling.

Professor Dowdy is an award-winning computer educator. He has been the
recipient of various awards, such as an Award paper at SIGMETRICS 1984,
the Tau Beta Pi Award for Teaching Excellence, and an Alexander von
Humboldt Foundation Award. His major areas of interest are performance
prediction modeling, parallel workload characterization, multiprocessor
system modeling, and performance model validation. Dowdy is the current
coordinator of the SIGMETRICS electronic bulletin board and the General
Chair of the ACM Sigmetrics '94 conference.
