Strategic Mapping Introduces First Industry Standard Software Development
Tools for Mapping

New Suite Enables Integration of Applications, Client/Server Databases with
Geographic and Market Information Systems

Software Development Conference, San Jose, Calif., March 15, 1994 Strategic
Mapping, Inc. (booth #1108) today introduced two suites of software
development tools designed for ISVs and VARs who want to create customized
applications that integrate geographic, demographic and customer database
information into vertical market and industry-specific applications.

SMI is the first company to create a complete suite of application
programming interface (APIs) for geographic information systems (GIS)
based on industry standards such as Microsoft's Visual Basic and C, which
allows developers to leverage their familiarity with these languages.

Called Atlas Script/VB and Atlas Script/C, Strategic Mapping's Development
Suites are designed for use in conjunction with Atlas GIS, SMI's desktop
mapping software package, and Atlas SQLink, the company's client-server
connectivity tool.

"Atlas Script/VB is extremely robust in its functionality and provides the
Visual Basic programmer with a tremendous tool for creating powerful,
graphically rich desktop mapping applications," said Cornelius Willis,
Visual Basic Product Manager for Microsoft Corporation. "This is a great
example of a technology provider with world-class vertical market
expertise capturing the essence of their core technology and delivering it
in a form that every Windows developer can use. It's a winning strategy
for SMI and their customers."

Target Market

The suites are designed for ISVs (independent software vendors), VARs
(value-added resellers) and in-house developers who have the need to
create applications in which data can be viewed, analyzed and presented
geographically. Atlas Development Suites enable developers to overlay onto
digital maps information such as marketing, sales or financial figures,
along with target market, demographic or other select data. The benefit to
developers is twofold: less time is required to build applications; and
completed products have greater appeal to end users since interfaces can
be customized or adapted to meet unique needs.

Suite Components

Strategic Mapping's Development Suites include a copy of Atlas GIS, Atlas
Script/VB or Atlas Script/C and Atlas SQLink.

At the heart of each Suite is Atlas GIS, a powerful geographic information
system which is bundled with an extensive selection of digital maps and
demographic files needed to build applications. Atlas GIS provides
database and map display and query capabilities for viewing and analyzing
market information on the desktop.

Atlas GIS supports local area networks such as Netware 3.1 and can directly
access client-server databases using Atlas SQLink. Atlas software offers
users the ability to establish connectivity, create and save relational
queries and download data locally from virtually any SQL database. In
addition, the company's Visual Basic and C APIs allow developers to
leverage their knowledge of widely-used development languages to build
application-specific interfaces.

Capabilities and Command Set

Atlas Script/VB is a powerful development tool that allows users to quickly
create solutions tailored to their needs. It extends Microsoft's Visual
Basic command set with more than 100 commands specifically for use with
Atlas GIS, and enables users to define new commands for specific tasks,
automate repetitive functions and design complete application modules.
Users can also take advantage of other Visual Basic add-ons from
third-party developers. Through Visual Basic's support for OLE (object
linking and embedding) and DDE (dynamic data exchange), Atlas Script/VB
enables Atlas GIS users to have live linkages to other applications.

Atlas Script/VB provides access to all of the core-level functionality of
Atlas GIS. User interfaces can be built from scratch or combined with all
or part of the existing Atlas GIS interface. Atlas Script/C provides
identical capabilities to developers who prefer writing in C. Developers
can:

*Create their own menus, forms and button bars
*Automate the process of building presentation-quality projects
*Display information or perform queries
*Implement their own help screens
*Control preferences or settings
*Automate calculations or selections

Pricing and Availability

Individually, the Atlas Development Suite components are priced as
follows:

* Atlas GIS retails for $1,595 per copy
  (runtime units are also available).
* Atlas Script/VB or Atlas Script/C retail for $795 per copy.
(Microsoft Visual Basic must be purchased separately.)
* Atlas SQLink is built in and included at no charge in Atlas
  GIS for Windows version 2.0.

An Atlas Development Suite bundle, which includes all of the above
products, is available to qualified developers at the Software Development
Conference for $995. Atlas Script/VB and Atlas GIS for Windows version 2.0
will ship in April; Atlas Script/C will ship in May.

Uses for GIS Software

Software from Strategic Mapping is used in applications such as sales
territory design, sales performance review, retail site selection, target
marketing, market research, catastrophe/risk management and numerous other
areas where strategic business decisions rely on accurate analyses of
demographic or market data in relation to geographic characteristics.
Along with the digitized maps used with its software, SMI offers more than
100 gigabytes of industry, consumer and geographic databases.

About Strategic Mapping, Inc.

solutions by offering a complete family of software and database products.
Strategic Mapping's Atlas family of desktop mapping software products are
used by approximately 50,000 businesses, universities, government agencies
and research organizations throughout the world, including more than half
of the U.S. Fortune 500 companies. In late 1993, SMI acquired Donnelley
Marketing Information Services (DMIS), a premier supplier of demographic
data for business analysis and target marketing. DMIS is best known for
CONQUEST, its personal computer-based geo-demographic marketing
information system, which provides access to DMIS' demographic, economic
and geographic databases.
