Embedded Systems Programming in C and Assembly
By John Forrest Brown

Van Nostrand Reinhold has announced the release of EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
PROGRAMMING IN C AND ASSEMBLY, a comprehensive guide to the construction,
use and development of embedded systems software.

Embedded systems are ROM-based computer systems that are typically embedded
within larger systems in order to function as controllers or
sub-systems--the technology that makes "smart bombs" smart. Commonly used
in consumer products such as microwave ovens, automobiles, and security
systems, embedded systems are designed to respond in very precise ways.
They can be utilized to inform an automobile operator of fuel consumption
rates, or trigger evasive action after an aircraft computer detects
approaching missiles.

"The problem with this field is that most of the information on embedded
systems was scattered, until now." Says author John Forrest Brown.

The reader is presented with an in-depth study of a missile-to-aircraft
interface and several sophisticated communication examples. Brown goes on
to cover requirements gathering and documentation, embedded systems
development environments, and error detection and correction.

"...Embedded programming is a broad application topic," said Jim McDonald
of JMT Technologies. "(Brown) covers many common areas of application.
discussing concisely some of the least talked about, but most problematic
areas (i.e. transportability, start-up, mapping)."

Intended for programmers, engineers and consultants involved with the
development of embedded systems software, EMBEDDED SYSTEMS PROGRAMMING IN
C AND ASSEMBLY includes a 3.5" diskette with source code templates that
can be used to develop embedded software for both Inter and Materially
embedded systems.

John Forrest Brown has worked with a number of small entrepreneurs and
large corporations such as IBM, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy and
UNISYS. Brown is affiliated with Bayside Computing, Inc., a Freeport,
Florida-based software development house.

Since its founding in 1948, Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR) has pioneered the
publication of high-quality engineering, technical and scientific
reference books. VNR's computer book group, founded in 1978, publishes an
extensive list of timely, high-level technical books for computer
professionals and business executives in any industry. The books are
written by industry authorities in each subject area and are often
published in cooperation with leading hardware and software vendors. All
VNR titles can be purchased through the Van Nostrand Reinhold Bookstore
Cafe, the newest online shopping service on CompuServe's Electronic Mall,
as well as through major book chains, independent book stores, book
distributors and college bookstores.
