Practical guide to major routing protocols published by Van Nostrand

ROUTING IN TODAY'S INTERNETWORKS

The Routing Protocols of IP, DECnet, NetWare, and AppleTalk

By Marl Dickie

While there have been many books written about the world of data
communications, precious few have elected to delve deeper into the realm
of routing technologies in internetworks.

To fill this need, Van Nostrand Reinhold has published Routing in Today's
Internetworks, the first book to explore all the latest link-state
protocols: Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate
System-Intermediate System (IS-IS), Netware Link Services Protocol (NLSP),
and Apple Update-based Routing Protocol (AURP).

Communication between computers located in different networks is done with
devices called bridges and routers. Bridges allow for the flow of data
between computers, but offer no direction. Routers survey the various
paths that the data could take, then decide which route is best.

"In today's work environment, the network is becoming more and more of a
standard tool than ever before," says author Mark Dickie, a principle
instructor for WellFleet Communications in Billerica, Massachusetts. "The
goal of this book is to provide the network manager, network administrator
and the network designer with information on the latest movement in the
routing world."

As companies add more computing resources to their environment, thereby
expanding the boundaries of information trafficking, Dickie notes, the
need to link the various distributed networks into a cohesive user network
assumes a greater degree of importance.

Routing In Today's Internetworks serves as a broad overview and a practical
working guide to major routing protocols, as well as assessing older
protocols up to the most current routing methodologies. Relevant
implementation issues connected to the creating, converting and supporting
of multiple routing protocols are discussed in depth. Innovative ideas for
improving network flexibility and functionality are also covered.

Since its founding in 1948, Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR) has pioneered the
publication of high-quality engineering, technical and scientific
reference books. VNR's computer book group, founded in 1978, publishes an
extensive list of timely, high-level technical books for computer
professionals and business executives in any industry. The books are
written by industry authorities in each subject area and are often
published in cooperation with leading hardware and software vendors. All
VNR titles can be purchased through the Van Nostrand Reinhold Bookstore
Cafe, the newest online shopping service on CompuServe's Electronic Mall,
as well as through major book chains, independent book stores, book
distributors and college bookstores.
