PANASONIC INTRODUCES 486SLC/E VERSION OF ITS LOW-VOLTAGE NOTEBOOK

New CF-1000A Combines 3.3V Operation With High-Speed Microprocessor

NEW YORK, June 28, 1993 -- Panasonic Communications & Systems Company
(PCSC) announced today the CF-1000A -- an enhanced version of its CF-1000
low-voltage, lightweight notebook computer -- featuring a Cyrix 25 MHz
486SLC/e 3.3V microprocessor in addition to a detachable floppy disk drive
that can be easily replaced with an additional battery.

Similar to the CF-1000, the CF-1000A weighs a mere 5 lbs. and measures
1.25" thin. Along with a Cyrix 486SLC microprocessor the notebook also
features 150/330MB hard disk capacity with 80/170MB hard disk drive and
SuperStor disk compression utility software installed on the hard disk. In
addition, the CF-1000A offers standard 4MB of RAM, expandable up to 12MB.

"When designing a 486 follow-up to our CF-1000, our engineers were charged
with creating a product that offered the speed of a 486 microprocessor
with the lightweight convenience of the original notebook," said John
Meaney, national sales and marketing manager for Panasonic's Computer
Division. "This added speed, combined with the rugged durability of its
forerunner, is designed to provide Fortune 1000 users with a tool that's
as efficient as it is strong."

Low-Voltage Operation

The CF-1000A employs VLSI Technology Inc.'s single-chip, high-performance
VL82C315A SCAMP II Low-Power System Controller. The chip is ideal for
low-power notebooks in that it enables versatile peripheral support,
greatly reduces system parts count and cost, and saves power in portable
applications. The

V182C315A supports 3.3V, 5.0V or mixed-mode operation without external
level shifters.

Panasonic's CF-1000A utilizes Cirrus Logic's CL-GD6412 LCD VGA Controller,
combining the industry's highest quality liquid crystal display (LCD)
graphics with a unique "mixed voltage" operating capability. It is the
first such device to allow major interface operation at either 3.3V or
SV.

Back-up Power Keeps It Running For Hours

The CF-1000A gives computer users a reason to keep a spare nickel metal
hydride (NiMH) battery on hand, because that is all it takes to breathe
extra power into the CF-1000A. By simply removing the detachable floppy
disk drive and inserting an optional second NiMH battery, users can
continue working without losing their place for additional hours.

In addition to offering added power, NiMH batteries can be recharged in
1.25 hours to full capacity before they are completely discharged,
eliminating the "memory effect" of nickel cadmium (NiCD) batteries.

Slim & Trim, Yet Tough

Panasonic uses a newly developed material to make the CF-1000A light yet
strong. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic provides a tough, resilient shell
that ensure the CF-1000A will withstand the same treatment as currently
available notebooks without being as heavy.

Additional features of the CF-1000A include: 640 x 480 VGA display with 1:1
dot aspect ratio with FL sidelight, five standard ports (Dsub 9-pin
serial, Dsub 25-pin parallel, 15-pin VGA, Mini Din 6-pin EXT.KB/Mouse,
dedicated 200-pin AT BUS and PCMCIA Type II) and two internal slots (RAM
expansion and modem). The CF-1000A's keyboard features 84 keys with a 101
AT key layout emulate, and its switches include a control power button,
reset control, FDD eject button and LCD contrast.

The CF-1000A will be available in late-July at a suggested retail price of
$1,999 through select authorized resellers.
