QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 Brings Color Printing to Mainstream Business
Applications

The World's First Desktop Color Laser Printer Provides High-Quality Color
and Monochrome Printing in a Single Device

JUNE 14, 1993 MOBILE, AL - QMS, Inc., the company that introduced the world
to color PostScript printing in 1987, again leads the way with a
breakthrough color product: the world's first desktop color laser print
system. The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 uses laser technology to produce
vivid, dependable, low-cost color output, as well as high-quality
monochrome output, on a variety of paper stocks.

Its color and monochrome output, true laser quality, a low cost per page,
and a host of networking and multiplatform connectivity capabilities make
the QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 the first desktop printer which will allow
ordinary users to affordably add color to everyday documents, such as
spreadsheets, memos, letters, proposals and presentations in order to
communicate more effectively.

While printing high-quality black as well as high-quality color on a single
device has been difficult to achieve with other desktop color
technologies, the ColorScript Laser 1000 does both very well. It delivers
accurate renditions of color and monochrome images and text either
separately or on the same page, and can often serve as a business' primary
printer for both.

Color output from the ColorScript Laser 1000 is brilliant, rich, vibrant
and detailed. Its toner-based laser technology produces durable output
which will not flake or rub off on adjacent pages (as does solid ink) nor
fade (as does inkjet). With the ColorScript Laser 1000, users can print
monochrome and color images and text on the paper stock and transparency
film they prefer, and get consistent, high-quality laser printing in both
color and black and white. Its cost per page is low enough to make the
ColorScript Laser 1000 practical for use as a general office printer.

Because it is based on QMS Crown technology, the QMS ColorScript Laser 1000
fits seamlessly into virtually any computing environment, and provides
fast throughput, extensive connectivity, language compatibility and ease
of use. Simultaneously active interfaces and job spooling allow different
types of computer systems to send documents to the printer at the same
time, making the printer an efficient part of a mixed computing
environment. Multitasking increases printer throughput in heavy use
environments, reducing the time users spend waiting for finished output.
ESP (emulation sensing processor) technology, a form of artificial
intelligence for emulation switching, eliminates the need for users to
specify the printer language for their documents.

"The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 brings exciting new color printing
capabilities to the desktop," said Ray Rosewall, QMS executive vice
president of worldwide sales and marketing. "The ColorScript Laser 1000
takes advantage of the benefits of laser technology to give users the
ability to integrate color and monochrome effectively in their documents.
The ColorScript Laser 1000 lets people print professional-looking
materials that communicate ideas more clearly and use color to give added
emphasis to key points. Like our other Crown print systems, the
ColorScript Laser 1000 connects directly into most computing environments,
making it an ideal shared printer for businesses in which color can be
used to clarify and focus the information needed for accurate, timely
decision making."

Susan Hayes, QMS product manager, explained, "People want to use color in
their documents but they don't want to worry or think about printing them.
Our color laser technology opens the door to color enhanced output for all
levels of computer users by giving them fast, easy and affordable color
and monochrome hard copy. They just create a document, then get a printed
version of what they see on their computer screens. Most importantly,
those who have considered investing in a color printer but have delayed
because of their need for high-quality black and white printing as well
can now get both color and monochrome in one easily shared,
high-performance print system."

Applications

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 is appropriate for many applications for
which monochrome laser printers are currently used, including general
office printing, financial reports, business presentations and proposals,
desktop publishing, technical publishing, newsletters, CAD/CAM and
document imaging. In each of these application areas, users can enhance
and improve readability of their documents by selectively adding color.

For example, color can be used in spreadsheets to make critical figures
stand out and correspondence can be amplified with color notes or color
clip art and printed on electronically stored color letterhead forms.
Presentations and proposals produced on the ColorScript Laser 1000 can
include color easily at a much lower cost than with previously available
alternatives. Desktop publishers can take advantage of state-of-the-art
color matching capabilities for first-pass proofing and can use highlight
color to flag important information, such as revisions.

Color Laser Technology

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 produces vivid, durable, repeatable colors
as well as monochrome images at 300 dpi. Four self-contained toner
cartridges, containing cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow and black toner,
supply the basic colors used to create a palette of 16.7 million colors.
The QMS system notifies users when a toner supply for a particular color
is low, and users replace only the toner color needed.

The ColorScript Laser 1000 transfers an entire color image to paper in a
single pass, for sharp color registration. A belt, rather than the paper,
makes four passes (one for each color) to capture the latent image, which
is assembled on the printer's drum then transferred to the paper in a
single pass.

Benefits and Advantages

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 is designed with ease of use in mind,
offering a range of color matching capabilities, including WYSIWYG (What
You See Is What You Get) color from monitor to output. Color matching
systems supported include Apple Computer, Inc.'s ColorSync and Electronics
For Imaging, Inc.'s EfiColor Color Management System. The Business Color
Rendering Dictionary (CRD) provides WYSIWYG output to users who do not use
systems and/or applications which support ColorSync or the EfiColor Color
Management System. A Colorimetric matching system is also provided.

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 is equipped with the standard emulations and
interfaces needed to be compatible with most computer systems and mixed
computing environments. Resident emulations include PostScript Level 2 and
Level 1, HP PCL5 with GL/2 (which supports color) and an optional DEC LN03
Plus emulation. Standard interfaces include parallel, serial and
LocalTalk.

QMS Crown technology also offers a variety of network interface options to
directly connect the QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 to most popular local area
networks, making it easy for businesses to provide color printing
capability to a number of users with a single ColorScript Laser 1000.
NetWare, EtherTalk TCP/IP or TCP/IP and DECnet combined are supported on
Ethernet networks and NetWare or TCP/IP is supported on Token-Ring
networks.

For easy upgradability, the ColorScript Laser 1000 utilizes a
software-loadable system, a Crown capability which allows printer system
software to be located on the printer's standard, internal 60 MB hard
disk. To add new features, languages or upgrades, new system software is
simply downloaded via floppy disk from the host. This makes the print
system virtually obsolescence-proof, protecting the user's investment.

For fast output, the QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 is powered by an Intel
80960CF/25 MHz RISC processor. The print system's 12 MB standard RAM can
be expanded to 32 MB via user-installable SIMM modules and the printer is
also equipped with a 60 MB internal hard disk drive. Both RAM and hard
disk space are used for job spooling, freeing hosts and networks for other
tasks.

The combination of Crown technology and fast RISC processing allows the QMS
ColorScript Laser 1000 to print at or near its rated engine speeds: 8
pages-per-minute (ppm) for monochrome (black) and 2 ppm for full color.

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 is equipped with an expanded selection of 65
built-in scalable fonts for PostScript language printing, providing users
with an ample selection of typefaces for the variety of applications for
which the printer will be used. TrueType fonts are also supported.

The QMS ColorScript Laser 1000 meets the paper handling requirements of
business printing with a standard 250-sheet input paper tray. A second
250-sheet paper feeder is available as an option.
