XIRCOM ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR CORDLESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK
TECHNOLOGY

Leading component, personal computer and software companies back Xircom
Netwave protocol in move to hasten interoperability and availability of
cordless local area networking.

NEW YORK, NY -- June 28, 1993 -- Xircom, Inc. (NASDAQ:XIRC) today announced
availability of Xircom Netwave technology to component, personal computer
and software partners in an effort to foster universal interoperability
and availability of cordless LAN products. Industry leaders participating
in today's event indicated they support Xircom and its effort to hasten
worldwide acceptance for this new approach to in-building, high-speed,
cordless communications.

Xircom Netwave is a cordless LAN technology that includes a radio-based
physical layer and a Media Access Control (MAC) layer protocol based on
distributed access and control. The radio is a 2.4 GHz, spread spectrum,
frequency hopper that delivers a raw data rate of one megabit per second.
The Xircom Netwave MAC layer protocol provides an asynchronous data
delivery service that is equivalent to the service provided by Ethernet.
This MAC protocol can be used with a variety of cordless implementations,
such as direct sequence RF and infrared. It has been submitted for
consideration to the IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Standards Committee.

"By opening up the Xircom Netwave technology, we are promising mobile PC
users and network administrators interoperability when they choose a
cordless LAN solution," said Dirk I. Gates, president and CEO of Xircom,
Inc. "The industry support voiced today will ensure that users will have
the same option to mix and match solutions as they do with wired LAN
products."

Opening Up The Technology

"Over the past three years, a number of companies, including Xircom, have
contributed to the wireless LAN standards effort of the IEEE 802.11
committee," Gates said. "Although the committee has been working
diligently on this standard, we are still years away from a final
document. Until that time, we will cooperate and work closely with key
industry participants to deliver compatible products based on Netwave. We
believe this initiative will stimulate a wider acceptance of our cordless
LAN technology and will generate the growth of cordless communications
worldwide."

In unveiling the technology today, Gates announced strategic business
relationships with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., and NCR Microelectronics
Products Division. These licensing agreements grant the right to produce
and market cordless LAN chipsets, boards and other products using Xircom
Netwave technology.

"The lack of a common standard for cordless LANs is a major roadblock to
realizing the full potential of mobile computing," said Bob McConnell,
vice president of AMD's Personal Computer Division. "Netwave will remove
that barrier."

Also announced today, Xircom and Digital Equipment Corporation have entered
into discussions to jointly develop mobility enhancements for wireless
communications.

"We believe that, over time, LAN users will want to extend the convenience
and simplicity of cordless and wireless connectivity beyond a single,
logical LAN," Gates said. "We are pleased to be working with Digital, a
world class leader in complex networks, to explore this possibility."

"We are delighted to see Xircom introducing wireless products today and
planning for future evolution," said Jim Slane, business manager, Mobile
and Wireless Program, Digital Equipment Corporation. "We believe the
demand for mobile connectivity will escalate over the next few years. Our
discussions with Xircom are one way that Digital is aggressively working
to meet the growing needs of the mobile user."

Pledging Their Support

Xircom is working closely with key hardware and software suppliers to
ensure that cordless LANs will work, on a worldwide basis, with a wide
range of network operating systems, computing devices, and software
applications.

"We applaud Xircom and their partners for developing interoperable cordless
LAN products," said Navindra Jain, vice president and general manager of
Network Management and Internetworking Products Division, Novell Corp. "We
believe that Netwave will expand the LAN market by providing wireless
attachment to existing LANs. Novell will evolve NetWare and the NetWare
Multiprotocol Router to support the needs of mobile computers attached to
cordless LANs like Netwave."

At today's announcement, AST Research, Dell Computer Corp., NEC
Technologies, Inc., Norand Corp. and Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. also
voiced support for Xircom Netwave technology.

"AST continually explores new technologies that increase productivity for
mobile computer users," said Dan Sheppard, AST director of product
marketing, portable systems. "Wireless communications is a key ingredient
to effective and productive mobile computing. The Xircom Netwave protocol
provides a common standard that will make true wireless computing a
reality."

"NEC applauds Xircom's cordless strategy," said Robert G. Levin, director,
product marketing, Portable Computer Products, NEC Technologies, Inc.
"Xircom's well-designed PCMCIA card not only adds versatility to our Versa
product family, but their unique approach provides a new level of
functionality and ease-of-use. In addition, Xircom's standards approach
provides users with a level of insurance for the future. NEC plans to work
closely with Xircom to ensure these exciting capabilities are readily
available to Versa users."

"As a company long committed to standards, we strongly feel Xircom's
Netwave technology is an innovative solution, that could establish a
common format for the wireless connectivity market," said Dr. Johns F.
(Jeff) Rulifson, director, Technology Development Group Sun Microsystems
Computer Corp. "It is critical that the market must have a full complement
of protocol standards. Network connectivity is an integral part of the
client/server approach to networking and we look forward to working with
companies like Xircom in developing IP based networks which provide
solutions for the issues presented by nomadic computing devices."

"As a participant in the IEEE 802.11 Standards Committee, Norand is pleased
to endorse the functionality of Xircom's Netwave products being officially
announced today," said Greg Reyes, vice president radio frequency division
from Norand Corporation. "The features of Netwave are consistent with the
requirements of portable wireless computer communications in many
environments. Xircom should be lauded for their efforts to Remote
interoperability between products manufactured by different companies."

Demonstrating the First Cordless LAN

Xircom demonstrated its new cordless LAN products for portable, handheld
and pocket-sized computing devices. These products allow mobile PC users
to communicate with existing wired networks using cordless links. They
also allow for ad hoc, temporary networks on a cordless, peer-to-peer
basis. The Xircom Netwave product family represents the first truly
cordless solution, cutting both the network and the power cables.

Available early Fall 1993, Xircom will offer a family of connectivity
products based on the Netwave spread spectrum, frequency-hopping radio and
cordless LAN protocol. The Xircom Netwave product line includes a PCMCIA
2.0-compliant adapter, a parallel port adapter and an access point that
provides a bridge between cordless computing devices and a wired
Ethernet-based LAN. A Token Ring version of the access point will be
available in 1994.

Founded in 1988, Xircom is the leader in the development and manufacture of
external connectivity solutions for the personal computer market. The
company pioneered the use of the universal PC parallel port to connect PCs
to a LAN and has sold more than 500,000 external LAN adapters to date.
