IBM AND WORDPERFECT DEMONSTRATE SEAMLESS DESKTOP DICTATION

NEW YORK, June 29, 1993 . . . Merging one of the world's most popular word
processing programs with a highly acclaimed speech recognition technology,
WordPerfect and IBM are demonstrating IBM's desktop dictation technology
at PC Expo. IBM's most advanced speech recognition system takes dictation
directly into WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2.

"Porting the technology to an Intel processor is a major IBM Research
breakthrough," said Elton B. Sherwin, manager, speech recognition strategy
and market development, IBM Personal Systems. "We're delighted to build on
this breakthrough by demonstrating this new technology with WordPerfect."

"We are demonstrating how WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 users can use dictation
to enter text, format documents and navigate through features with IBM's
desktop dictation technology for desktop systems," said Brad Caldwell,
product marketing manager of WordPerfect for OS/2 at WordPerfect
Corporation. "WordPerfect continually monitors emerging technologies to
ensure that WordPerfect users obtain the best business solutions."

IBM's speech recognition dictation system, developed by IBM Research, was
introduced at Fall Comdex 1992 on a RISC System/6000 client-server
platform. Demonstrated on a stand-alone PS/2 at Spring Comdex 1993, IBM's
desktop dictation technology was a finalist in BYTE Magazine's Best New
Technology awards.

Successfully porting its most sophisticated speech recognition technology
for dictation from high-end RISC-based processors to Intel 486 and Pentium
chips, IBM's desktop dictation technology is an innovation that puts IBM's
most powerful speech-recognition capabilities onto the desktop. This IBM
Research technology breakthrough will make it possible for PC users to
access the same advanced speech capabilities previously available only to
those on local area networks.

IBM's desktop dictation technology provides the most accurate and
sophisticated speech recognition capabilities available today. The system
features a 20,000 plus word vocabulary and takes dictation at a throughput
of more than 70 words per minute. It uses advanced algorithms developed by
IBM Research to analyze acoustical data and word sequences to correctly
choose between like-sounding words, such as "to," "two" and "too" or "our"
and "hour," and to recognize the start of a sentence and provide
capitalization. In addition, IBM's desktop dictation technology has
navigation capabilities which enable users to use voice commands to move
around within the system while dictating.

WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 users can use speech recognition technology to
access all the features in WordPerfect. WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 offers
multi-threaded background printing, and support for drag and drop on the
Workplace Shell. A Button Bar lets you attach any feature to on-screen
buttons for quick access. The QuickMenu lets you quickly select and edit
Button Bars by clicking your right mouse button. Grammatik 5 is available
from the Tools pull-down menu for grammar checking. The new QuickFinder
offers some of the fastest indexing and text retrieval in the industry.

Wide-ranging Applications

Because speech recognition lets users convert their speech directly into
computer text or commands, it has long been regarded as a tool that can
unlock the full potential of computers for attorneys, health care
professionals, journalists, scientists and a host of other users -
including non-typists and people whose physical limitations prevent them
from typing at a keyboard. Lawyers can compose letters and legal briefs
quickly and accurately. In health care, a radiologist could use the
technology to report on an X-ray simply by speaking into a microphone at a
workstation while still looking at the X-ray.

Journalists, freed from the keyboard, could use the technology to write and
take notes.
