DeLorme Launches Low-Cost Global Positioning System To Answer the Question.
"Where on Earth Am I?"

FREEPORT, Maine; May 15, 1993--DeLorme Mapping announces a low-cost
solution for PC users to link the GPS satellite system to maps. DeLorme
has released GPS MapKit SV, a software-only version of its award-winning
technology that interprets the data stream from a GPS satellite receiver
to place a blinking dot on a moving map display.

Using standard PC laptop computers linked to a CD-ROM drive, users are able
to display their locations anywhere in the United States on incredibly
detailed maps.

The GPS MapKit SV comes with a map database of all roads, streams, and
lakes in the United States, even in most rural areas. In major
metropolitan areas, street address ranges are available by clicking on the
display.

Under this version, users configure their own hardware from popular-priced
GPS receivers that connect to the serial port of the laptop computer,
along with a CDROM drive hooked to a parallel port. The map database is
contained on a single CD-ROM disk.

The introductory price for the GPS MapKit SV is $795.

The Global Positioning System answers the question, "Where on earth am I?"
The system uses the basics of ancient navigation with the addition of
state-of-the-art technology. GPS relies on a constellation of 24
satellites launched under the direction of the United States Department of
Defense. Signals from three or more satellites are recorded by a GPS
receiver and are translated into a reading of latitude and longitude.

GPS MapKit SV takes the information from the receiver and displays it on a
digital map, placing a symbol on the map to represent the location of the
receiver. By constantly monitoring these signals, the system can display
such information as the speed, direction, and altitude of the vehicle.

In addition, GPS MapKit SV also allows users to trace their progress on the
map with a "bread crumb" function. As they move, the display leaves a
trail of markers on the map in an overlay file, which allows them to keep
a log of their travels. These files can be saved and printed.

The mapping database in the GPS MapKit SV gives users access to a highly
detailed, seamless map of the entire United States. It allows them to zoom
in on every city, town, and rural area in the country, and includes more
than 5 million streets and 1.1 million geographic and man-made features.
Maps include city and town names; highway, street, and road names;
railroads; mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams; and many prominent
buildings and monuments.

GPS MapKit SV is the software version of DeLorme's GPS MapKit, a package
that was introduced in 1990. That system included much of the hardware
needed to access GPS and was linked to DeLorme XMap, a professional
Geographic Information Management System that sells for $4,995.

GPS MapKit won an award from Popular Science magazine in 1991 as one of
"the year's 100 greatest achievements in science and technology."

The new GPS product is linked to MapExpert, DeLorme's inexpensive digital
mapping system, which has allowed the company to slash thousands of
dollars from the price of setting up a GPS system.

DeLorme will also offer a second-generation hardware version of GPS MapKit,
GPS MapKit HVG, which includes all the necessary hardware except the
computer. The system can be linked to either MapExpert or XMap, depending
on the users' needs.

GPS MapKit SV consists of GPS Link II, software that links the data from
the GPS receiver to the digital maps, and MapExpert, a software license
that includes a nationwide map database on a single CD-ROM. In addition to
the database, MapExpert lets users customize and print an unlimited
variety of maps. The program has received high praise from the press and
end-users since its introduction last August.

System requirements for the GPS MapKit SV include an IBM-compatible
portable computer ('386 or faster recommended), 2 MB RAM, 4 MB hard drive
space available, VGA graphics, portable CD-ROM drive, GPS receiver, remote
mount GPS antenna, and Windows 3.0 or higher.

For safety reasons, the driver or pilot of a vehicle should not use the GPS
MapKit SV while the vehicle is in motion, but should stop in a safe place
before attempting to operate the software. DeLorme strongly recommends
that a passenger, not in control of the vehicle, be on board to fully
utilize the capabilities of this system.
