SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES THE NORTON BACKUP 2.2 FOR WINDOWS
--The New Standard for Easy, Automatic Backups --

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- May 17, 1993 -- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC)
today extended the industry standard in backup protection with the
announcement of The Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows. Targeting users who
need a backup product that is compatible with their chosen operating
system and hardware devices, The Norton Backup 2.2 offers a complete
backup solution that is fast, reliable and provides the ease-of-use to
assure regular backups are performed.

The Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows is a superset of DOS 6.0 backup, offering
read and restore capability between DOS 6.0 hack-up sets and visa versa.
Computing workgroups, which include a mix of DOS and Windows-based
machines, can standardize on Norton Backup 2.2 without concern for a
heterogeneous mix of backup solutions and potential loss of data. For even
faster backup execution, Norton Backup 2.2 offers added support of
high-speed tape controllers from Colorado Memory Systems and Iomega to
supplement Norton Backup's tape drive support.

"Data backup is a process guided by reliability, transfer speed and
ease-of-use," said Ken Felderstein, Symantec's security business director
of the Peter Norton Group. "Norton Backup 2.2 builds on our heritage of
backup, offering Windows users the features required for efficient data
backup and the only backup solution to provide cross compatibility for DOS
6.0 backup users."

EASE OF USE

Users can take advantage of pre-configured backup routines for popular
application files such as Lotus 1-2-3, dBASE, Microsoft Word and Excel,
and WordPerfect. The built-in Scheduler automatically runs attended or
unattended backups at the user's convenience. The Norton Backup Assistant
calculates when it's time to backup all files or just the ones that have
changed, and automatically backs up the appropriate files. The Norton
Backup also executes automatic "on-the-fly" floppy disk formatting. The
user can backup multiple drives in a single session as well as create
custom menus for these selections.

CORPORATE-WIDE AUTOMATION

The Norton Backup provides all the necessary tools for MIS/PC
administrators to standardize backup procedures within their
organizations. Administrators can create backup sets for corporate-wide
distribution using the unique Preset option, enabling users to quickly
select and run custom backups.

RELIABILITY

The Norton Backup is the safest and most reliable backup product on the
market. It restores data from badly damaged backup disks that other backup
programs are unable to read. When backing up, bad diskettes are
automatically rejected without forcing the user to restart the backup
process. Norton Backup for Windows offers cross-compatibility with The
Norton Backup for DOS.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows is available at a suggested retail price of
$149. Upgrades to registered users of either Norton Backup for DOS or
Windows are available tor $19. With a purchase of DOS 6.0 users can also
buy The Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows for $69 at most major software
retail stores.

Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows runs on IBM AT (80286 or higher) and 100%
compatible PC's and requires Windows 3.0 or higher and DOS 3.1 or higher,
with 2MB RAM and a hard disk drive. The Norton Backup 2.2 for Windows
supports DOS 6.0, QIC 40/80 compliant tape drives, DOS devices and
