ADAPTEC ELECTED TO PCI STEERING COMMITTEE
Joins Other Industry Leaders To Establish New Bus Standard

MILPITAS, Calif. -- Adaptec, Inc., a leader in Small Computer System
Interface (SCSI) and other input/output (I/O) technologies, now serves as
a member of the Steering Committee for Peripheral Component Interconnect
(PCI), a new high-speed bus architecture. Adaptec joins other industry
leaders on the Committee--AMD, ATI Technologies, Compaq, Digital Equipment
Corp., IBM, Intel, National Semiconductor and NCR -- in overseeing
development of the PCI processor bus and working to establish PCI as an
industry-wide standard. Adaptec is the only developer and manufacturer of
both SCSI board and chip I/O products for the PC market that serves on the
Committee and provides input in both areas to the Steering Committee.

"Adaptec has long been active in developing and promoting PC industry
standards and, therefore, brings its extensive standards experience to the
Committee," said Paul Matteucci, Adaptec vice president and general
manager of the company's System Products Operation. "For example,
Adaptec's Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) software has become
the de facto industry standard. In addition, our work with the SCSI
standards committee over the years has promoted technology that enables PC
users to take advantage of all the robust features of personal computers
and peripherals."

Matteucci explained that the increased throughput demands of today's
multitasking applications are straining the bandwidths of existing
standard interface buses. PCI promises to greatly ease this strain,
allowing the industry to plan now for future-generation technologies and
ensuring the development of a PC with the highest performance at the
lowest cost.

"Because PCI is non-microprocessor specific and is technically advanced, it
is the perfect bus to accommodate SCSI add-in board and motherboard
solutions both today and in the future," Matteucci said.

Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPI), is an international manufacturer of Small
Computer System Interface (SCSI) host adapters and software for personal
computers. The company also designs, manufactures and markets proprietary
SCSI and AT-interface VLSI circuits, controllers for the imaging industry
and SCSI development systems. Founded in 1981 and headquartered in
Milpitas, Calif., Adaptec is recognized as the design pioneer and market
leader in SCSI and input/output (I/O) technology, and is the creator of
Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) software, the industry standard
I/O operating environment. The company currently employs approximately
1,350 people at its sites located in the United States, Asia and Europe.
