QMS Introduces Low Cost 600 DPI PostScript Level 2-Compatible Laser Printer

The QMS 420 Print System Brings Benefits Of High-Resolution To Single Users
And Small Workgroups; Price Reduction For Popular QMS-PS 410 Highlights:

MAY 3, 1993 -- MOBILE, AL -- QMS, Inc. today introduced the QMS 420 Print
System, a low-cost, 4-ppm, 600 dpi laser print system designed for small
workgroups or single users. U.S. list priced at $1,995, the QMS 420 Print
System features emulations of both PostScript Level 2 and Level 1 as well
as PCL 4 and HP-GL.

QMS also announced today that it has lowered the U.S. list price of its
popular QMS-PS 410 laser printer from $1,995 to $1,595. Introduced in
July, 1990, the QMS-PS 410 revolutionized the laser printer industry by
introducing interoperability features such as printer-resident emulation
switching, simultaneously active interfaces and configurable input
buffers. The QMS 420 Print System includes this same strong subset of QMS
Crown technology features.

Using QMS Multi-Res technology, the QMS 420 provides true 600 x 600 dpi
output which produces crisp text, fine lines, saturated black fills, four
times more gray levels than at 600 dpi and clear reproduction of scanned
images. For enhanced speed, users may also print at 300 x 300 dpi.

"The QMS 420 carries on the tradition of the QMS-PS 410 in setting
price/performance standards," said Ray Rosewall, QMS executive vice
president of worldwide sales and marketing. "We expect to reach a very
broad market with this product, from corporate users to professional
publishers to home office users. For our corporate customers, the QMS 420
strategically fills out the low end of QMS's family of high-resolution
PostScript Level 2-compatible print solutions. This enables QMS to be a
single-source provider of print solutions which provide consistent
behavior and document appearance across the product line."

Pat Domning, QMS product manager, explained, "Users of all kinds are
demanding higher resolution output. While corporate users in larger
departments have been quick to move to 600 dpi, many users with smaller
budgets also want their proposals, presentations and correspondence to
make the most professional impression possible. The QMS 420 provides
quality-conscious users with a low-cost, high-resolution printer for
PostScript, PCL and HP-GL documents. The strong subset of Crown features
in this system also means that it will fit seamlessly into most computing
environments, even if they are made up of different computer systems and
applications."

The 4 page-per-minute QMS 420 Print System comes standard with parallel,
serial and LocalTalk interfaces. All interfaces are simultaneously active,
allowing users to send print jobs through multiple interfaces at the same
time. Furthermore, each interface is equipped with a user-configurable
input buffer. The input buffers increase printer throughput and return
control of the host computer(s) to the user more quickly, freeing the host
CPU for other tasks.

The QMS 420 also features QMS ESP (Emulation Sensing Processor) technology
to provide true, printer-resident emulation switching capabilities. ESP
technology uses artificial intelligence techniques to analyze incoming
print data, determine the printer language of the print job, and then
switch the printer to the appropriate language mode. This capability,
combined with the simultaneously active interfaces and input buffers,
makes the QMS 420 Print System ideal for use in mixed computing
environments.

The QMS 420 Print System is powered by a Motorola 68020 MPU with a clock
speed of 20 MHz. The system comes standard with 6 MB RAM and is expandable
to 10 MB using SIMM modules.

Standard resident emulations for the QMS 420 include PostScript Level 2 and
Level 1, HP PCL 4, and HP-GL 7475A/7550A. A DEC LN03+ emulation is
available as an option. The print system includes 39 resident, scalable
Type 1 typefaces for PostScript printing. An optional font card adds 26
typefaces for a total of 65.

Users can easily upgrade the QMS 420's standard 70-sheet input capacity to
320 sheets total input with a 250-sheet input cassette that fits
underneath the printer. The printer supports letter-, legal-, executive
and A4-size paper, transparencies and label stock.

Pricing, Channels and Availability

The U.S. list price for the QMS 420 Print System is $1,995. A one year
return-to-depot warranty is included. Options and consumables pricing is
as follows: 250-sheet input cassette, $195; 26 additional typefaces, $249;
DEC LN03+ emulation, $395; toner cartridge (3,500 prints), $95.

The QMS 420 Print System will be sold through QMS's extensive worldwide
