Link Your LabVIEW Programs Directly to ORACLE with New Medium VIs

January, 27, 1993 - Austin, TX - National Instruments and Ellipsis, Inc.
(Boston, MA) today announced Medium, a new LabVIEW for Macintosh add-on
that links LabVEW directly to ORACLE databases. Ellipsis, Inc. is a member
of the National Instruments Alliance Program.

Medium, a virtual instrument (VI) library, adds technical data management
capabilities to LabVIEW by linking the package directly to local or remote
ORACLE databases. Until now, engineers and scientists had to use
cumbersome flat file storage methods to keep track of data and processed
results. With Medium, LabVIEW users can now create programs for
information-intensive applications, such as computer-integrated
manufacturing, laboratory information management, distributed processing
and/or control, quality control systems, and heterogeneous multi-user
client/server architectures.

Originally developed at C.S. Draper Laboratory Inc., a leading research and
development facility, Medium Interface VIs transparently embed the full
ORACLE Call Interface (OCI) programmatic command set within LabVIEW code
interface nodes (CINs). These low-level VIs are available to the
programmer for direct structured query language (SQL) interaction with the
database.

Medium also includes high-level Access VIs that intelligently encapsulate
common database operations into easy-to-use modules for logging on to the
database and writing or retrieving data. Also, a Utility VI is included
for ad-hoc database queries. Database Manager can interactively log on to
an ORACLE database, create and delete tables, determine the names and data
types of table columns, and perform simple search, insert, and retrieve
operations. Comprehensive Example VIs are also included.

About LabVIEW

LabVIEW is a general-purpose programming tool with extensive libraries for
data acquisition, instrument control, data analysis, and data
presentation. With LabVIEW, engineers and scientists build software
modules called virtual instruments (VIs) instead of writing text-based
programs. LabVIEW features a library of ready-to-use controls, graphs, and
strip charts for quickly and easily building custom user interfaces and
control panels. With LabVEW, users build block diagrams as the executable
programs. Icon libraries include Data Acquisition, GPIB, VXI, and
Instrument Driver VI libraries for controlling the company's plug-in data
acquisition, DSP, and signal conditioning hardware. LabVIEW has over 260
GPIB, VXI, and RS-232 instruments using the company's interface hardware,
along with Analysis VI libraries for performing data analysis, with
routines ranging from simple statistics to advanced digital signal
processing (DSP).
