Five Outstanding Journalists Recognized by SPA 
Lewis, Louderback, O'Connor, Raskin, and Silverstein Honored

March 5, 1993 (San Diego, CA) - The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
yesterday recognized five journalists for their outstanding work. The
awards were presented at the annual SPA Excellence in Software Awards
ceremony to honor those individuals who cover the PC software industry in
an accurate and insightful manner. Journalists honored included:

* Peter Lewis, New York Times, Best Software Reviewer;
* Robin Raskin, PC Magazine, Best Industry Analyst/Editorial;
* Jim Louderback, PC Week, Best Trade Press News Reporting;
* Rory O'Connor, San Jose Mercury News, Best General Press 
  News Reporting; and
* Jeff Silverstein, Software Industry Bulletin, Best Financial
  Reporting and Analysis.

Members of SPA's Marketing and Public Relations Special Interest Groups
nominated and selected the recipients. Past winners have included such
well-known journalists as Keith Farrell, Johnny Wilson, Jeff Tarter,
Lonnie Brown, Larry Magid, Michael Rodgers, Stewart Alsop, and Michael
Miller.

Peter Lewis, columnist for The New York Times, was recognized as Best
Software Reviewer, a category that honors the writer who most consistently
presents accurate, fair and thorough representations of software products
in their reviews published in industry or non-industry publications. A
technology editor and reporter since 1982, Lewis' three weekly columns are
syndicated to several hundred papers internationally.

The second Journalism Recognition Award was presented for Best Industry
Analyst/Editorial, which honors the analyst who most consistently presents
insightful and articulate reflections of the software industry's evolution
in either editorial or industry trend analysis columns for the trade or
general press. The journalist recognized in this category was Robin
Raskin, Executive Editor of PC Magazine. Raskin is responsible for all
software features and new product sections, and she also writes Pipeline,
a regular commentary on industry trends.

The third Journalism Recognition Award was presented in the category of
Best Trade Press News Reporting to Jim Louderback, Director of PC Week
Labs. This category honors the journalist who best covers the industry's
important issues in a timely, objective manner for an industry trade
publication. In addition to managing the PC Week review process,
Louderback pens a weekly column on technology and also writes reviews for
PC Week.

The fourth Journalism Recognition Award was given in the category of Best
General Press News Reporting to Rory O'Connor of the San Jose Mercury New.
This award is given to the individual who best covers the industry's
important issues in a timely and objective manner in a general business or
technology column of a non-industry publication. As a business writer
specializing in the computer industry, O'Connor's stories and columns
explore a wide variety of business, social and technical topics affecting
computer users.

The final award is bestowed for the Best Financial Reporting and Analysis
and honors the person who best covers the business and financial aspects
of the industry, including financial reporting, stock market or industry
trend analysis. Jeff Silverstein, editor of Software Industry Bulletin,
was the recipient. Silverstein's weekly newsletter gives indepth
background and financial analysis of key companies and events.

The Software Publishers Association is the principal trade association of
the PC software industry. Its 1,000 members represent business, consumer,
and education software firms around the world. The SPA has offices in
