Multi-Tech's New V.32terbo Modem Supports Higher Speed Applications

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA February 12, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading manufacturer of data communications equipment, announced today a
new modem that supports AT&T's de facto V.32terbo standard, extending
current V.32bis 14.4K bps modem technology to 19.2K bps speeds.
MultiModemII model MT1932BL provides data rates of 16.8 and 19.2K bps
while maintaining compatibility with lower-speed modems that implement
V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis and other common modulations. Today's announcement
comes just weeks after the joint announcement by 18 communications
companies who endorsed the V.32ter modulation standard proposed by AT&T.
MT1932BL shipments will start in the second quarter of 1993 and its price
will be $1199.

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "A number of higher speed
applications, such as interconnecting multiplexers and data over voice,
require the highest speed modems available now. The MT1932terbo is a modem
designed for today's application needs."

MT1932BL provides synchronous or asynchronous operation over dedicated or
dial-up networks with V.42 error correction in asynchronous mode for 100%
error-free data and V.42bis "4-to-1" data compression yielding for
effective throughputs up to 76.8K bps (depending on file content). For
async operation over the dial-up line, it includes a Group 3 fax modem
(for 9600 or 14.4K bps fax transmissions), The MT1932BL comes bundled with
MultiExpress data communications software (for dial-in, dial-out and
remote-control operations), and MultiExpressFax software (based on
industry standard EIA Class 2 fax modem commands). It also includes all of
the features and speeds of the other MultiModemII products with additional
support for four-wire leased-line operation.

A dial back-up feature lets the new modem continue data communications even
if the leased line fails. When the leased line is returned to operation,
it automatically restores the current datacomm session to leased-line
operation. UUCP spoofing using Multi-Tech's own adaptive protocol speeds
up batch file transfers within UNIX environments using the g protocol. The
MT1932BL uses industry standard "AT" commands for modem configuration and
dialing, supports V.25bis for synchronous dialing applications and has a
built-in dialing directory for storing up to 10 phone numbers.

Three RJ11 or modular phone jacks are available on the rear panel in
addition to an RS232 serial port for connection to sync or async devices.
A complete set of LEDs provide easy visual monitoring of the modem's
operation. The special Error (ERR) LED lights up when the leased line is
disconnected and the unit has gone to dial back-up (the back-up phone
number or numbers are preset in the modem's nonvolatile memory).

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, manufacturer's reps, systems integrators, value-added
resellers (VARs) and retailers. Multi-Tech Systems Inc. can be contacted
