KODAK ANNOUNCES NEW PHOTO CD PORTFOLIO SOFTWARE

Multimedia Publishing Format Demonstrated at Intermedia Conference

SAN JOSE, Calif., Mar. 30, 1993--Eastman Kodak Company today announced and
demonstrated its new software for authoring Photo CD discs at desktop
computers. The new Photo CD Portfolio authoring software will create Photo
CD Portfolio format discs that can become a major publishing medium, for
use on TV and computers.

Kodak Leads in Delivering Photography to the Computer Desktop

Georgia L. McCabe, director for Kodak's worldwide Commercial CD Imaging
organization, said "The Portfolio authoring software provides commercial
customers increased access to the benefits of the Photo CD formats. This
is the beginning of desktop creation of custom-designed multimedia
titles."

Features of the new software include creation of discs containing
combinations of photographic images, stereo audio, graphics and text
screens, and programmed access.

Photo CD and CD-I players can display Kodak Photo CD Portfolio discs, like
all Photo CD format discs, on TV. The discs also can be used on computers
with a Photo CD-compatible CD-ROM XA drive and the appropriate software.
The Photo CD Portfolio format is set to become the universal
cross-platform CD-ROM publishing medium.

Photo CD Portfolio Authoring Software Features

The new Photo CD Portfolio software provides users the ability to create
Photo CD Portfolio discs at their desktops. Users can do the following:

* Develop and produce interactive multimedia presentations and titles
directly on the desktop in the Photo CD Portfolio format, combining
photos, audio, graphics, text, and programmed access

* Edit images from Photo CD Master or Pro Photo CD Master discs using
off-the-shelf image editing software and write the edited files to Photo
CD Portfolio discs for storage or distribution

* Combine photographic-quality images from Photo CD Master and Pro Photo CD
Master discs with other digital images to create Photo CD Portfolio discs
for presentations, storage, or distribution

* Copy Photo CD Master and Pro Photo CD Master discs to Kodak Photo CD
Portfolio discs for low- to medium-volume distribution

* Merge images from an assortment of Photo CD Master and Pro Photo CD
Master discs to new Photo CD Portfolio discs

A module of the Photo CD authoring software package will be used to convert
non-Photo CD images, such as TIFF files, to Photo CD image pack format.
The converted images can be used on Photo CD Portfolio discs along with
Photo CD images. This means users can include images generated with
virtually any image-creation or image-editing software, such as Adobe
Photoshop, and with digital cameras such as the Kodak DCS Professional
Digital Camera System.

The new features provide photographers and designers with the ability to
edit Photo CD images and save them to Photo CD Portfolio discs in the
Photo CD image pack format. The features also enable producers of
presentations to create images in other software applications, then
convert those images to Photo CD image pack format before writing them to
Photo CD Portfolio discs. The resulting discs will be usable on any Photo
CD-compatible device--on TV and on computers.

Kodak's Portfolio authoring software comprises the following utilities:

* Image-packer, which converts TIFF files to Photo CD format
* Copy/merge, which copies Photo CD image packs from other Photo
CD discs, maintaining Photo CD playback compatibility
* Portfolio organizer, which arranges the digital information,
including images and audio, with linear and non-linear
sequencing (programmed access or branching), in the Photo CD
  format

Kodak will publish a description language so other software developers can
support output to Photo CD Portfolio discs from within their applications.
The description language will be interpreted by the Photo CD authoring
software, to be written subsequently to a Photo CD Portfolio disc at the
desktop or at a service bureau, photo lab, or photofinisher.

Photo CD Portfolio Applications

Using the features of the Photo CD Portfolio format--which can include
digital photos, audio, text, graphics, and programmed access, users can
produce:

* Business presentations with narration and menu choices
* Real estate listings with photos, audio, and descriptive text
* Training and education materials for wide or narrow
  distribution
* Wedding albums with music and narration
* School yearbooks with audio
* Family trees with branches and comments
* Books with narration

With Kodak Photo CD Portfolio disc authoring software, the user can create
these applications on the desktop. Moderate quantities of individual
titles can be produced directly at the desktop using the Kodak PCD writer
200. Each original Photo CD Portfolio disc also can be used as a master
for mass production of discs, using the same process that now is used for
audio CDs. Mass-produced CD-ROM discs can cost as little as one dollar
each, which makes this format an economical publishing tool.

Pricing and Availability

Kodak plans to ship Photo CD Portfolio authoring software this summer. The
software will be available first for Sun Sparc Stations, next for the
Macintosh computer platform, and finally for the Windows platform sometime
in the future.

Prospective users of Photo CD Portfolio authoring software can call the
Kodak Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-242-2424, extension 53, for more
information. Software developers interested in integrating support for
Portfolio authoring in their own applications also may call this number
for more information. Software pricing will be announced at a later date.
