Windows "Floppy-Net" Synchronization/Transfer/Backup Utility

2 June, 1993 -- Open Windows releases WinUpD8R 3.0, a major upgrade to its
popular 'Floppy-Net' Transfer/Backup Manager for Microsoft Windows 3.1.

Open Windows has released WinUpD8R 3.0, a Windows utility that keeps
multiple PCs 'UpD8ed' to the most current file versions using floppy disks
as the transfer medium. The term "synchronization software" is becoming
the common terminology for programs performing this function. WinUpD8R
also provides triple-redundant backup for the user's data while performing
its function.

WinUpD8R is the only Windows-based program specifically designed to easily
maintain current data files between multiple PCs.

In his June review of WinUpD8R 2.1 in Windows Sources magazine, Barry Simon
states "WinUpD8R is a wonderful example of shareware in action. It
provides a simple, inexpensive, elegant solution to a real problem:
forgetting to take the most recent version of a file home or with you on
the road." WinUpD8R 3.0 adds a host of new capabilities and ease-of-use
features to its already well-regarded array.

Features added to the new version include:

* Include/Exclude files from the UpD8 process by their extension. Very
useful for only UpD8ing data files which are mixed in with executables and
other file types.

* New Directory Selection Mode, Use Dir 1's Subdirectories Only, is handy
for structures where the main program executables and support files are in
a "top" directory, with the data directories below. In this case you may
wish to UpD8 only the subdirectories of the top directory

* New UpD8 mode, Clean Up, forces Dir 2 = Dir 1. Without any user
redirection, the operation is the equivalent of erasing Dir 2 and then
copying the contents of Dir 1 into Dir 2. This mode is very helpful in
re-synchronizing your directories after periodic "cleanups", thus the
exceptionally original name...

* Delete Pair function allows the file(s) currently displayed to be
deleted, a convenient way to keep your directories from becoming cluttered
while you're UpD8ing them

* Users can now give each Batch File a meaningful name to appear on the
pick list rather than being limited to Batch1, Batch2, etc.

Further improvements in "bulletproofing":

* Program now checks for UpD8s where the "new" file is more than a factor
of 10 smaller than the "old" file. Since computer malfunctions sometimes
result in a 0-byte file, this check prevents inadvertently "spreading"
this misfortune to other machines and gives the user a chance to bypass
the operation, even when Confirm On Each File is not checked.

* CleanUp checks for requests which will erase files on Dir2 that are not
currently on Dir1 and also checks for Dir1 files that are older that files
on Dir2. In both cases the user is given the option of bypassing the
operation. WinUpD8R continues to provide the intuitive, mouse-driven
interface and flexible options that users expect from a Windows program:

* Single-click UpD8 of multiple directories across multiple drives *
Optional smart (.~DO for .DOC) backup file creation

* File-by-file confirmation option * Automatic creation of directory
structures on the floppy(s) to aid in initial setup

* Automatic save of last directory pair setup or batch file on exit

* Extensive on-line Help documentation

Any two arbitrary directories, a pair of directories with the path of the
first disk's directory on both drives, a pair of directory TREES with the
structure of the first disk's directory and its subdirectories on both
drives, or a sequence of arbitrary directory path pairs specified in the
WINUPD8R.INI file can be UpD8ed in a single operation. UpD8ing of only
matching files in the target directories can be selected or new files can
be added either uni- or bidirectionally. WinUpD8R does NOT require that
the machines all have the same directory structures.

WinUpD8R is distributed as Shareware and is available now on CompuServe in
the WINSHARE Forum, Library 2 - File Utilities as file UPD8R.ZIP. A 30
day evaluation period is allowed, following which a $15.00 registration
fee is required. In addition to the extensive on-line Help, support is
available via CompuServe e-mail or US Mail.
