Bitstream Adds 23 New Designs to Its Typeface Library

Cambridge, Mass. (July 12, 1993)--Bitstream Inc. today announced the
addition of 23 new typeface designs to the Bitstream Typeface Library
(BTL).

Available immediately, the new designs come in fully-hinted PostScript Type
1 format for both the Macintosh and the IBM PC and will additionally be
offered in TrueType format for the Microsoft Windows 3.1 environment by
late summer.

The 23 latest additions to the Bitstream Typeface Library include the
Bitstream Cataneo family of nine faces, an exciting new calligraphic
typeface design in Light, Regular, and Bold weights with accompanying
Swash and Extended character sets for each weight.

Also included among the 23 new typefaces are Formal 436 (Bitstream's
version of Oscar), a calligraphic design in one weight; Geometric 885
(Bitstream's version of Bloc), a striking display face; and, to round out
the selection of new designs, six weights of Humanist 777 (Bitstream's
version of Frutiger); and five weights of Schadow.

Bitstream Cataneo: Swash Characters for Light, Regular, and Bold

Designed at Bitstream, the Cataneo family of typefaces was inspired by the
work of Bernardino Cataneo, a mid-16th-century writing master at the
University of Siena. The Cataneo family's prime designs are Cataneo Light,
Cataneo Regular, and Cataneo Bold. Moreover, three additional character
sets in the Cataneo family feature swash characters. These character sets
are Cataneo Light Swash, Regular Swash, and Bold Swash. Swash characters
are letters with an elongated or "flourished" stroke that adds a
decorative element to a character. Cataneo's lowercase swash characters
are particularly suited for adding an unusual accent to the end of a
sentence or paragraph, and its swash capital letters with decorative
extended strokes can be used to add unique typographic flair to the
beginning of a sentence or a paragraph.

Cataneo: Extended Characters for Light, Regular, Bold; Uncommon Ligatures

Cataneo's Light, Regular and Bold Extension Sets offer a range of
traditional ligatures, i.e. combinations of two characters, such as fi,
ff, fl, ffi, and ffl, and diphthongs, such as ae and oe. Moreover, they
boast uncommon ligatures for letter combinations such as Th, ct, st, and
sp.

In addition, these three typefaces feature old-style numerals that have
ascending and descending characters.

"Cataneo is a graceful Italic typeface," said Jacqueline Sakwa, of
Bitstream, who worked with Rich Lipton in designing the Cataneo family.
"We decided to develop this typeface because there wasn't an elegant
chancery cursive font on the market. One of our goals was to translate the
essence of Bernardino Cataneo's elegant, fluid style into a design that
would be faithful to the original style, but still have the clean, spare
character that today's market demands."

"The typefaces in our new Cataneo family are calligraphic faces that will
allow users to add a touch of elegance to their documents, such as
invitations," said Larry Oppenberg, vice president of Type Operations at
Bitstream. "We expect these faces to be of interest to high-end
typesetting houses, as well as to individuals who like to design formal
documents themselves.

"We believe that the 23 new designs we've added to our Typeface Library are
going to appeal to a wide audience of users because they offer a wide
selection of top-quality sophisticated text and headline faces," Oppenberg
said. "Moreover, with an introductory price of US $179 for the subtle
elegance of the Bitstream Cataneo family, we believe our customers will be
getting exceptional value."

The new Bitstream typeface designs are directly available from Bitstream at
1-800-522-FONT. Volume discounts and site licenses are available.
