HOUGHTON MIFFLIN ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF CHANNEL R.E.A.D. VIDEODISC
SERIES

June 28, 1993 -- Orlando, Fla. -- Today at the National Educational
Computing Conference (NECC), Houghton Mifflin announced the availability
of the Channel R.E.A.D. Videodisc Series, a Level I program which offers
15 entertaining and dramatic adventures designed to help third through
eighth grade students improve reading comprehension and written and oral
communication skills.

"My class was enthralled," commented Donna Byerlotzer, 5th grade teacher
from Emerson Elementary in Midland, Texas. "I was most pleased at the ease
in which the disc contents were adaptable to suit the needs of my two
classes. My students can hardly wait to read mysteries from the library,
and we're planning to write mysteries of our own!"

In each videodisc, students will explore one literary genre, a major
reading strategy and a support skill. The themes and strategies presented
not only correlate directly with Houghton Mifflin Reading: The Literature
Experience Copyright 1993, but compliment most reading programs used in
grades three and up.

Each story centers around the adventures of Rita, a space-age bookmobile,
and three young literary heroes, Paige Turner, Theo Saurus and Manuel
Scrito. Frequently, these characters will model reading strategies that
students will then be asked to practice and apply.

"Most of the time when we watch a movie, the whole class is loud and no one
watches it. But when we watched this everyone watched it and no one was
loud," said Erin Umberger, 5th grader from Emerson Elementary. "The
videodisc puts together the two things I like most, T.V. and reading."

Students at various points in the drama are prompted by the videodisc to
stop and review specific skills and strategies in order to help them solve
problems -- such as locating the missing mystery writer. The prompting
encourages students to ask questions and participate in group
discussions.

The Channel R.E.A.D. videodisc series includes the following titles: The
Case of the Missing Mystery Writer (Mystery), The Ordinary Princess
(Fantasy), Blue Jeans (Nonfiction), License to Drive (Realistic Fiction),
And the Winner Is...(Biography), Heroes of the Marsh (Narrative
Nonfiction), the Unfinished Trilogy (Serial Fiction), The Role of a
Lifetime (Realistic Fiction), Suspended in Space (Suspense), Get the
Message (Traditional Tales), The Heights of Adventure (Adventure), Meet
the Stars (Realistic Fiction), Rita Rides Again (Personal Narrative), Fax
to the Future (History), and The Runaway Robot (Science).

Designed to capture the attention of television and video-literate
students, Channel R.E.A.D. incorporates the best of live-action video,
computer animation, graphics and still images. To meet the needs of
today's diverse student population, Channel R.E.A.D. offers selected
narration in both English and Spanish. Selected print materials have also
been translated into Spanish.

Channel R.E.A.D. accommodates a variety of teaching and learning styles:
from small group to whole class instruction. Since there is no defined
instructional sequence to the series, videodiscs can be shared across
several intermediate grade levels.

In addition, Channel R.E.A.D. has been chosen by Curriculum Product News
District's Choice Awards, Top 100 Products of 1992-93 and the Media &
Methods Awards Portfolio Winner.
