Data Compression Technology Reaches New Heights

Spreadsheet Utility Delivers Unparalleled Compression Ratios and
Performance Improvements

Supports all Popular Windows and DOS Spreadsheets, Maximizes Effectiveness
of Disk Doublers

June 28, 1993 -- Needham. MA -- With the PC industry's attention focused in
recent months on general-purpose utilities that double a disk's capacity,
Intex Solutions announces a new file-specific compression utility that
compresses all popular Windows and DOS spreadsheet files by an average of
90 percent. "CompressMate" is a safe, transparent, on-the-fly compression
utility that may be used alone or in conjunction with disk doublers like
DoubleSpace or Stacker. The utility is available exclusively from Intex,
the leading publisher and reseller of spreadsheet enhancement products, or
from Intex-authorized resellers.

The Advantages of a File-Specific Compression Solution

The compression ratios achieved by CompressMate average 10:1 for typical
spreadsheet files comprised of text, values and formulas; for larger files
containing many formulas, compression ratios of over 100:1 can be
achieved. These results are unmatched by any general purpose utility, and
are more than twice as effective as those achieved by SQZ!, a popular
DOS-based spreadsheet-specific add-in. Because CompressMate has been
engineered to work on spreadsheet files exclusively, it offers benefits to
spreadsheet users that traditional compression utilities or disk doublers
are unable to offer. These benefits not only include far superior
compression ratios, but also fundamental spreadsheet performance
improvements including faster file save and retrieve. At the same time,
CompressMate was designed to work in conjunction with disk doublers, and
users of disk doubling utilities will enjoy maximum compression results
when they use CompressMate along with their disk doubler.

A Product with Widespread Appeal

The potential market for CompressMate is vast, given an estimated 20
million+ spreadsheet users worldwide. In particular, the following groups
of users are likely to find the greatest benefits from CompressMate: users
with large numbers of spreadsheet files; users who have created large
spreadsheet models (such as financial analysts, budget managers, etc.);
users with limited disk space (such as owners of laptops, notebooks,
palmtops, or older PCs); users who rely on floppy disks for file storage;
users who need to transmit files over a modem; users with satellite-based
E-mail systems; and users on networks where disk doublers are not
supported.

Early CompressMate users speak highly of the product; beta tester Louis
Culver of Birmingham, Alabama writes "CompressMate is an excellent
program. One 76,126 byte file was compressed to just 4,667 bytes! " And
beta tester Howard Vendaleck of Painesville, Ohio notes, "CompressMate
will be very useful on my Toshiba 3100 with only a 10 megabyte hard disk
CompressMate will extend the useful life of my computer, saving me money
upgrading my hardware."

Other Unique Advantages

Aside from the superior compression ratios achieved by CompressMate, the
product offers a host of additional benefits and conveniences. First,
CompressMate is compatible with all popular DOS and Windows spreadsheets,
including Lotus 1-2-3, Excel and Quattro Pro. By contrast, SQZ! does not
currently support Lotus 1-2-3 release 3.4 or any Windows spreadsheet
formats. Second, CompressMate works completely "on the fly." This means
that users can work in a normal manner while CompressMate compresses and
uncompresses files transparently. Unlike SQZ!, CompressMate can even work
simultaneously with compressed or uncompressed files, so it's not
necessary to remove CompressMate from memory to work with regular
spreadsheet files. Third, depending on the user's system and files, file
save and file retrieve may be improved considerably. The performance
improvements in save and retrieve on a standard 486 PC were found to
average 2.5 times; the performance improvements were even greater when
saving to or retrieving from slower diskettes, networked drives and laptop
drives. Fourth, CompressMate is fully network compatible, so network users
can now benefit from file compression even when other technologies, such
as disk doublers, cannot function. And finally, CompressMate, unlike some
other compression utilities, is fully compatible with file viewers, so
compressed files may always be seen and accessed easily.

When loaded, CompressMate occupies less than 50k RAM. Users are given the
option of retaining or removing formula values or blank cells during
compression, features that can enhance the compression results greatly.
CompressMate also includes features which allow users to easily perform
advanced operations such as batch compression or decompression. An
uncompress utility is provided and may be distributed freely, in order
that CompressMate files may be read by non-licensed users.

Price and Availability

The single-user list price of CompressMate is $99 (plus $5 shipping), with
an introductory price of just $79 through the end of 1993. Corporate
multi-user and LAN versions are also available at considerable savings;
for example, a 5-user pack is $350, and a 10-user pack is $600.
CompressMate is supplied separately in DOS or Windows versions. The DOS
version, compatible with Lotus 1-2-3 rel. 2.x, 3.x, Symphony and Quattro
Pro for DOS, is expected to ship by July 15, 1993. The Windows version,
compatible with Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows rel. 1.0, 1.1 and 4.0, Microsoft
Excel rel. 3.0 and 4.0, and Quattro Pro for Windows rel. 1.0, is expected
to ship by September 30, 1993. For more information, users may call Intex
