O'REILLY & ASSOCIATES RELEASES X WINDOW SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S GUIDE WITH
CD-ROM

SEBASTOPOL, CA -- July 5, 1993 -- O'Reilly & Associates announces the
publication of THE X WINDOW SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S GUIDE with CD-ROM, the
first and only book/CD package devoted to the issues of system
administration for X and X-based networks. IT is Volume 8 in O'Reilly's
renowned X Window System series.

According to publisher Tim O'Reilly, THE X WINDOW SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S
GUIDE fills a unique need. "By bundling the software with the
documentation, the reader gets everything they need in one convenient
package. CD-ROMs provide a durable, cost-effective distribution medium
that is becoming the standard way to distribute operating systems and
third party software."

The X CD-ROM contains over 600 megabytes of X11 related software. It
includes complete MIT X11R5 "core" and "contrib" source code with fixes
1-21 applied to core and complete MIT X11R4 "core" and "contrib" source
code. It has precompiled binaries of MIT X11R5 core software for Sun4,
Sun3, DECstation, and IBM RS/6000 platforms. Other features of the X
CD-ROM include:

* "Smart" installation software that allows custom installation of supplied
binaries and a complete "snapshot" of the example code for the O'Reilly X
Window System Series books and The X Resource journal;

* Source code and precompiled binaries of several clients discussed in THE
X WINDOW SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S GUIDE. These include the xtici and
xcoloredit color editors and the patch program for supplying software
fixes;

* Publisher Fiel System "Rock Ridge" software from Young Minds to permit
Sun, DEC and IBM platforms to mount the CD-ROM using the Rock Ridge
extensions. These extensions make the CD-ROM look like a UNIX file
system;

* Several utility programs that permit the source code to be recompiled and
updated whenever new patches are made available, under both the ISO 9660
and Rock Ridge formats.

Written by Linda Mui and Eric Pearce, Volume 8 provides authoritative
support that clarifies the issues raised by X, including the subtle
changes in the standard UNIX way of doing things and the blurriness caused
by X crossing boundaries between different platforms. Under X, users can
run applications across the network, on systems with different servers
than the applications were designed for originally. Many of these issues
are poorly understood and the technology for dealing with them is in rapid
flux.

THE X WINDOW SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S GUIDE helps overcome these difficult or
poorly understood issues by presenting:

* An overview of X that focuses on issues that affect the system
administrator's job, be they UNIX system administrators or anyone faced
with the job of administrating X (including those running X on stand-alone
workstations).

* Information on obtaining, compiling, and installing X software, including
a discussion of the trade-offs between vendor supplied and the free MIT
versions of X;

* How to use PC and Mac X servers to maximize reuse of existing hardware
and convert outdated hardware into X termainls;

* How to set up xdm, the X display manager, which takes the place of the
login program under X and can be used to create a customized turnkey X
session for each user;

* Issues involved in making X more secure. X's security features aren't
strong, but an understanding of what features are available can be very
important, since X makes it possible for users to intrude on each other in
new and sometimes unexpected ways;

* How fonts are used by X, including a description of the font server;

* How to obtain and install additional public domain software and patches
for X;

* Covers features new in R5, including the font server and Xcms.

O'Reilly & Associates is recognized worldwide for its definitive books on
the X Window System, UNIX, the Internet, and Distributed Computing
Environment. Working closely with developers of new technologies,
O'Reilly's editors are "computer people" who use the software they write
about. The company's planning and review cycles link together authors,
computer vendors, and technical experts throughout the industry in a
creative collaboration that mirrors the strengths of the "open systems"
philosophy itself.
