AFiS - Graphical Software for Adaptive Filtering and Signal Analysis

October 1, 1993 -- St. Paul, MN - Instrument Systems, Inc. has announced
the availability of an add-on signal analysis software package for the
National Instruments LabVIEW graphical instrumentation software. LabVIEW
users on Windows PCs, Macintosh computers, or Sun SPARCstations can put
the Adaptive Filtering instrument System (AFiS) to work in signal
processing applications in the medical, communications, image processing,
radar, sonar, and speech processing fields.

Adaptive filters are unique because they can adapt to varying conditions in
the input signal. Fixed coefficient filters, such as Butterworth or
Chebyshev filters, cannot do this and under some conditions may fail.
Users can choose between different filters to study various aspects that
might be relevant to the particular application. After selecting the
filter, a panel pops up that displays the input signal with noise and the
filtered output signal along with the filter learning curve. AFiS includes
controls, so users can easily change the filter parameters while observing
the signals. Engineers and scientists can use sample signals provided with
AFiS to investigate different filters and vary filter parameters before
working with real application signals. For adaptive filtering
applications, the ability to quickly assess convergence rates, numerical
robustness, update rates, and so on, is critical. AFiS is a powerful tool
for visualizing cause-and-effect relationships that may have a profound
impact on solving problems for signal processing applications.

ADAPTIVE FILTERING INSTRUMENT SYSTEM

Description

The Adaptive Filtering Instrument System (AFiS) is a LabVIEW developed
add-on package that provides the basic tools for analysis of signals that
do not allow a fixed coefficient filter design. Adaptive filters are
self-designing based on properties of the received signals and are not
based on gross spectral properties. Applications include Adaptive noise
cancellation, beamforming, parameter estimation, Adaptive spectral
estimation. Included with the package are examples that illustrate the use
of the AFiS toolbox. Representative signal-plus-noise data is simulated
and displayed; adjustments to these and the filter parameters can be made
to enable the study of your application. Stand-alone Applications can be
created using the AFiS VI library.

Basic Package

The basic AFiS package includes many versions of the LMS Adaptive filtering
algorithm. The Gradient Adaptive Lattice (GAL) is included for
Applications that need a more robust solution, which is used in the ASAiS
(Adaptive Spectral Analysis Instrument System). Also included are
application examples and a front panel that allow you to study these
filters with your signals. Price: $595.00 US, executable only (LabVIEW not
required) $395.00 US

Advanced Package

The advanced AFiS package includes the basic AFiS package with the addition
of the QRD Least Squares Lattice (QRD-LSL). This filter represents the
state-of-the-art in adaptive filtering algorithms. It is based on the most
advanced and stable numerical methods available today and exhibits very
fast convergence. Included with this package is the same interface and
examples as the basic package with the QRD-LSL as an additional choice.
Also, many VI's from the MUS (Matrix Laboratory Instrument System) are
included along with a wavefront array processor simulation. Price: $950.00
US, executable only (LabVIEW not required) $595.00 US.

System Requirements

386 with math coprocessor, 486 and above recommended.
Macintosh or Sun Sparc station
LabVIEW with advanced analysis from National Instruments
(LabVIEW is not required for the executable only versions)
