CARLSBAD, Calif -- October 19, 1993 -- NEC Technologies has chosen the
best-selling CD-ROM encyclopedia to include at no extra charge with its
new Ready Multimedia PCs. The new affordably priced Ready multimedia
personal computers are aimed at home office PC users, with many features
designed for productivity, and off-hours entertainment.

Bundled with the Ready Multimedia systems is Compton's Interactive
Encyclopedia. which includes all nine million words of the 2-volume print
encyclopedia accompanied by exciting video sequences, audio clips, atlas
and more. CIE features a powerful search and retrieval engine, SmarTrieve
which enables users to do their research using common English language
questions.

Compton's NewMedia Executive Director of Business Development, Elliott
Dahan, said," Forty percent of all CD-ROM based software presented on
retail shelves is from Compton's and its affiliate labels. Compton's OEM
program is a complement to this highly successful retail program.
Compton's welcomes NEC to a limited list of OEM Partners who believe that
product integrity is essential for delivering value to the end user."

Mr. Dahan added that it simply makes sense to market a competitively
priced, fully integrated system. "Home users will be delighted to be free
of the configuration challenges they often face when trying to put their
own multimedia system together. The bundled Compton 's Interactive
Encyclopedia will allow them to get immediate satisfaction out of their
system." he said.

"The Ready Multimedia systems are 'plug and work ' as well as 'plug and
play', making the selection of Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia a
natural choice, " said Denny Lane, director of desktop marketing at NEC
Technologies. Incorporating many features associated with higher end PCs,
the Ready Multimedia systems integrate NEC dual or triple speed CD-ROM
drives, fast local bus graphics capability, 16-bit stereo sound board,
local bus technology, and remote diagnostics through the system's built-in
modem.

"NEC has already earned an excellent reputation for its CD-ROM drives and
Local Bus Video technology which will ensure the optimum performance of
our encyclopedia," said Norman J. Bastin, executive vice president of
Compton's NewMedia. "We are certain that the very same home office users
