Introducing HABITAT FOR NETWARE

October 15, 1993 -- Shrewsbury, New Jersey--Designed for people who manage
Windows on NetWare LANs, HABITAT FOR NETWARE simplifies administration of
Windows desktops with a centralized console that transforms NetWare user
groups into powerful workgroups. The HABITAT FOR NETWARE workgroup console
gives administrators the ability to create a standard Windows environment
for each user group on a NetWare file server. Each user sees a Windows
desktop that reflects their workgroup membership, as well as their own
customizations. Developed by Computer Knacks, HABITAT FOR NETWARE is now
shipping.

Automated Windows Administration

Because HABITAT FOR NETWARE workgroups are based on NetWare user groups,
alterations in group membership, made using standard NetWare utilities,
automatically reconfigure a user's Windows desktop environment. For
example, using SYSCON to make a user a member of a NetWare group that has
been enhanced with HABITAT FOR NETWARE workgroup properties, causes those
properties to appear on their Windows desktop--without any additional
steps.

Simplified Application Upgrades

HABITAT FOR NETWARE reduces Windows desktop configuration to a single point
of control. For example, when an application is defined within HABITAT FOR
NETWARE, the location of its executable is automatically described with an
alias--a unique HABITAT feature that permits the creation of intuitive
nicknames for DOS drive and directory combinations. Applications that are
part of a package are all defined using the same alias. As a result,
upgrading to a new version can be as simple as redefining one alias. When
applied at the workgroup level, all workgroup members are updated
simultaneously.

Workstation Independence

HABITAT FOR NETWARE provides users with access to their personal Windows
environment from any network workstation. A novel device-independent
engine eliminates considerations of display type, while a solid network
design enables transparent access to user configurations. The combination
results in a simple elegance which stands in stark contrast to the
complexities of managing other networked Windows installations.

A Powerful Desktop Manager for Users

The HABITAT FOR NETWARE desktop is a natural extension of the Program
Manager interface, eliminating the learning curve associated with
radically different desktop metaphores. It features folders which may
contain documents, directories and other folders. The HABITAT desktop
allows users to quickly recreate previous work environments, enhancing
productivity. A FileCache feature dramatically accelerates access to
recently opened files by offering the user a dropdown list to select from.
Users are spared the tedium of hunting through jungles of DOS directories
by presenting them with meaningful directory nicknames, called aliases.

System Requirements

Overall, HABITAT FOR NETWARE is exceptionally lean and fast compared with
other products: it requires less than 1 MB of disk space on the file
server, and less than 100K of RAM on each user's workstation.

Licensing

HABITAT FOR NETWARE is licensed on a file server basis, according to the
maximum number of users which NetWare will allow. Prices start at $245.00
for a 25-user NetWare file server, and go up to $695.00 for a 250-user
server. Site licenses are negotiated on an individual basis.

Dynamic Company

HABITAT FOR NETWARE is a second generation Windows desktop management
system for networks. It is the logical progression from HABITAT FOR
WORKGROUPS, which was introduced along with HABITAT FOR WINDOWS, a Windows
desktop manager, in March of 1993. According to Computer Knacks CEO, Kerry
Giftos:

Introducing HABITAT FOR NETWARE exemplifies our ongoing commitment to
helping make Windows easier to administer and use on a network. The level
of integration into the network infrastructure we desire is best achieved,
in the absence of a universal standard, by writing directly to proprietary
interfaces. We chose the NetWare platform for our first network-specific
product because of its leadership position in the LAN marketplace.
