Aldus ships first standalone PageMaker Addition

SEATTLE, October 11, 1993 -- Aldus Corporation today announced shipment of
the InfoPublisher Database Addition 2.0 software, an application that
links PageMaker 5.0 for Windows to database management systems--an
important connection for users who need to create professional-quality
publications using information from computer database files.

The InfoPublisher Database Addition is the first in a library of
standalone, boxed Additions that Aldus will provide. It also marks Aldus'
continued commitment to the database publishing industry.

"The InfoPublisher Addition provides the missing link between databases and
publishing in an easily understood and usable package," said Karen Howe,
senior product marketing manager. "While database publishing is not a new
concept, we know from talking with our customers that the market potential
is enormous. For example, we have found that one in four PageMaker users
have access to a database and import these files on a regular basis.

"InfoPublisher makes the concept a reality and extends PageMaker's
publishing power by supporting data from leading database systems,"
continued Howe. "Anyone who needs to produce graphically appealing
information retained in a database needs InfoPublisher, especially if they
already use PageMaker."

InfoPublisher will benefit anyone who needs to repeatedly publish data in
attractively formatted documents such as catalogs, directories, and price
lists. Target markets include banking, pharmaceuticals, automotive, retail
sales, real estate, insurance, and education.

InfoPublisher Database Addition, an upgrade to the Aldus PageMaker 4.0
Database Edition, provides complete integration with PageMaker 5.0 and
several new features. In InfoPublisher, users can now place data from such
databases as Paradox 3.5, Microsoft Access, FoxPro, and Excel, and it
provides improved ASCII text file support in addition to the previously
supported Borland dBase III and IV. The new version also complies with
Microsoft's Open Database Communication (ODBC) protocol, a key requirement
to working with future Windows database products.

Other new features are improved control over inline graphic images, which
is critical for the production of catalogs; automatic updates to
automatically reflow stories based on data or format changes;
easier-to-use interface design; a new tutorial; expanded and more
comprehensive documentation; the ability to launch InfoPublisher as an
Addition from within PageMaker; improved compatibility with PageMaker,
especially for styles and graphics; and the ability to group several
columns into one for use in side-by-side paragraphs, which makes
separating data into meaningful categories easier.

Core features allow the combination of data from multiple databases into a
single database publication; conditional formatting of data to format a
field based on the content of the database record; computational
capabilities to compute row summaries and create new columns from data in
existing columns; and formatting by number, date, or time. A
spreadsheet-like user interface eliminates the need to learn complex
syntax or a query language to manipulate database information.

InfoPublisher was developed by PageAhead Software Corporation. Aldus
licensed worldwide publishing and marketing rights to the product in
1991.

As an Aldus Addition, InfoPublisher is a robust program tailored primarily
to the specific publishing needs of PageMaker users. Additions add-on
modules automate routine and repetitive PageMaker tasks or enable users to
customize PageMaker for their specialized publishing requirements. Three
types of Aldus Additions exist: Additions as scripts, for PageMaker users
to automate specific PageMaker tasks; loadable Additions, which are
written in the C programming language to write modules that perform more
complex tasks than scripts; and standalone Additions, which rely on
application-to-application communications.

System configuration

The InfoPublisher Database Addition for Aldus PageMaker 5.0 requires
Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later and Microsoft 3.1-compatible hardware. The
recommended configuration is a 486-based DOS-compatible computer, 6-8MB of
RAM, an 80MB hard drive, a high-resolution graphics adaptor card, and a
mouse. The minimum configuration is a 386-based DOS-compatible computer,

and a mouse or other pointing device.
