SoundViewer Scientific Software Displays Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)
Sonograms in Real Time

October 20, 1993 -- Chambery, France - ASTER today announced SoundViewer
and LabQD, two new add-on products for the Macintosh that work with
National Instruments LabVIEW software. ASTER has also announced the
compatibility of LabQD and Fastdraw with LabVIEW 3.0. ASTER is a member of
the National Instruments Alliance Program.

SoundViewer, an interactive audio analyzer, uses the National Instruments
NB-DSP230x and NB-A21xx boards to acquire, process, and display up to four
analog input channels in real time on the Macintosh. With SoundViewer,
users can display standard wide and narrowband FFT sonograms and 3D
waterfall spectrograms. Users can interactively adjust the usual FFT
sonogram parameters such as time zoom, pre-emphasis, windowing functions,
display contrast, and brightness control. SoundViewer can also stream the
acquired data in real time (16 bits - up to 51.2 kHz - up to four
channels) to disk, using the Apple Audio Interchange File Format.
SoundViewer is particularly well suited as a preprocessing tool for
SpeechAccess, another ASTER product used to test speech and sound analysis
algorithms. A typical analysis session involves interactively choosing the
analysis material with the SoundViewer real-time sonogram, performing the
recording, playing back the sonogram to verify the signal (using the
SoundViewer disk mode), and then switching to SpeechAccess to fine tune
the FFT or other analysis algorithm. SpeechAccess is a Macintosh-based
speech research environment that uses the National Instruments NB-DSP2300
or NB-DSP2301 digital signal processing (DSP) boards with LabVIEW.
SoundViewer and SpeechAccess will soon be compatible with LabVIEW 3.0.

LabQD is a LabVIEW virtual instrument (VI) library that offers all the
capabilities of QuickDraw, the graphics manager of the Macintosh Toolbox.
With a basic knowledge of LabVIEW and of LabQD, users can design
sophisticated graphics programs in a few hours. This process would take
weeks using a classical Macintosh programming environment. Consisting of
about 120 VIs, LabQD provides performance comparable to state-of-the-art
C-based graphics programs. Included with LabQD is Fastdraw.

Fastdraw, now compatible with LabVIEW 3.0, is a ready-to-use LabVIEW VI
that provides the user with five different plotting modes to generate
high-speed plots. Fastdraw is a LabVIEW external window for numerical data
visualization at very high display rates.
