Multi-Tech Enhances MiniArray Turn-Key Gateways for Novell LANs

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 5, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a leading
data communications technology company, announced today expanded versions
of its MiniArray gateways for NetWare LANs. The new MiniArrays include a
larger cabinet with four expansion slots (instead of three) on an ISA
passive backplane. MiniArrays can now accommodate up to 16 modems using
MultiTech's ISI multiport serial cards. The MiniArrays are available in
models for Remote Node server and Data/Fax server operation. Depending on
the model, the MiniArray comes preconfigured and equipped with a Single
Board Computer (SBC), an eight-port Intelligent Serial Interface (ISI)
card, and the proper network interface card (NIC) for either Ethernet or
Arcnet Novell LANs. All models can be expanded with a second ISI. The
MiniArray is priced at $3599 (U.S.) for NIC-equipped models and $3499
(U.S.) for the generic MiniArray without a NIC.

"Sharing modems over LANs is just like sharing other LAN resources such as
disk space, processors or printers," states Raghu Sharma, President of
Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "And, as the number of PCs, modems and LANs
continue to increase, network managers can realize substantial savings by
sharing modems and phone lines among LAN users. Instead of one modem and
phone line per PC user, as many as eight users can share a single modem.
Often, the reasons modem sharing is not considered is the complicated
nature of setting up a functioning gateway. The MiniArray solves that
problem by providing a complete turn-key system. All you have to do is
plug in the modems on one end, the LAN on the other, insert a diskette and
turn on power. The preconfigured diskette automatically sets up the
gateway with generic user names and passwords. And since our MiniArrays
come with all the software you need for fax or datacomm, all you have to
do is select the right modems for your application."

The MiniArray comes in a mini-tower cabinet containing a 1.44 MB floppy
disk drive, a four slot ISAbus backplane, and power supply. It includes a
386SX Single Board Computer (SBC), an eight-port serial card (Multi-Tech's
own Intelligent Serial Interface (ISI) with octopus cable) and an optional
network interface card (NIC) for the type of LAN being used (e.g.,
10BASET/coax Ethernet, twisted pair Arcnet, etc.). The 386SX-25 MHz SBC
has 2 megabytes of RAM expandable to 16 megabytes, and includes two serial
ports, one parallel port, a floppy and hard disk controller, and a VGA
controller providing 800 x 600 pixel density in a 16-color format.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
