Multi-Tech Announces Enhancements for Fax Server Software

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 5, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced today
enhancements to its MultiExpressFax Server (MEFS) software for use with
external or internal Multi-Tech data/fax modems directly attached to the
fax server or to an asynchronous communications server (ACS). The
enhancements include PCL4 printer support, automatic receive fax printing,
remote administration and support for 250 users on Novell LANs. The
enhanced version of MEFS will ship in November of this year at a retail
price of $99.00 (U. S.) for a single user license or $249 (U.S.) for a 250
user site license. A site license of MEFS comes bundled with all
Multi-Tech data/fax gateway products.

According to Multi-Tech Systems president Raghu Sharma, "MultiExpressFax
Server is designed to work with Multi-Tech data/fax modems and networking
products like MultiModemLAN, MultiComAsyncGateway and MiniArray.
MultiExpressFax Server software turns a node PC into a Fax Server with
powerful broadcast and scheduling capabilities. You can also use
MultiExpressFax Server and our data/fax MultiModems with any industry
standard ACS and turn it into a combination data/fax gateway. That means
you don't need to buy separate expensive fax servers. With these latest
enhancements you can send faxes from any application as simply as printing
a document to a laser printer. On Novell LANs you can manage a server from
any node PC, and any number of LAN users can share the fax server's
modem."

MultiExpressFax Server gives LAN users two ways to send and receive faxes.
First, as a network fax program, a user can reserve a modem via any INT6B
or INT14 ACS software and send or receive faxes just as if the modem were
attached directly to the node PC. Since MEFS is equipped with DOS client
software, DOS-based PCs can send and receive faxes. Windows client
software is available with MultiTech's MultiExpressFax for Windows
software. Using the second send fax option, faxes can be sent or received
via the MEFS "server" option. In this mode, MEFS runs on a non-dedicated
node PC, which sends and receives faxes as required through any available
modem on an ACS or via a modem attached directly to one of its serial
ports. The non-dedicated fax server runs a TSR (Terminate Stay Resident)
program which sends and receives faxes on behalf of all other network
users. The client portion of the software runs on node PCs across Novell
NetWare, 3Com, or Microsoft LAN Manager networks. For optimum
productivity, the node PCs and fax server can all run different
applications in the foreground while MultiExpressFax Server will work
across a variety of LANs including Novell NetWare, 3Com and Microsoft LAN
Manager networks. The feature supporting up to 250 users is available on
Novell LANs only. The print fax option enables the automatic printing of
all received faxes on any network printer by loading a special TSR into
the selected printer controller.

With the new enhancements just announced, administration of the fax server
on Novell LANs can be done from any PC on the LAN. In addition to managing
the Network Fax Directory and monitoring and controlling fax operations,
the administrator is responsible for the following: Set up, modify, and
update network configuration; install client software and establish
procedures for exchanging information with the server; create, maintain,
and manage user accounts; route incoming faxes to respective users; manage
and maintain a global phone book available to all network users; monitor
network efficiency.
