Multi-Tech Announces Remote Node Gateway Family

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 5, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced today a family
of dial-in remote node communications servers for Novell IPX LANs. The
MultiComRNGateway can simultaneously connect up to 32 remote users to a
LAN using modems and phone lines. There are four MultiComRNGateway models
which start shipping next month featuring advanced statistical reporting
and remote administration. Each includes a combination Thinnet/10BASE-T
Ethernet NIC for connecting the Remote Node Server (RNS) PC to the LAN and
MultiExpressRNG software.

* Model RNGCOM consists of MultiExpressRNG software and an EN301CT16
Ethernet NIC. The RNGCOM can accommodate four sessions up to 9600 bps each
via the RNS's standard serial ports and sells for $799 (U.S.).

* Model RNI02 includes a two-port Intelligent Serial Interface card
(ISI502) which plugs into the RNS and can handle two simultaneous
high-speed 115K bps sessions. The RNI02 can be expanded to accommodate 26
users with additional eight-port ISIs. The RNI02 sells for $1799 (U.S.).

* Model RNI08 handles eight 57.6K bps sessions via the included eight port
ISI508 and sells for $2099 (U.S.). It can be expanded to accommodate 32
users with additional eight-port ISIs.

* Model MA8ER is a turn-key remote node system based on the Multi-Tech
MiniArray communications server. It includes a Single Board Computer (SBC)
which becomes the RNS PC, one ISI508 (a second ISI508 can be added to
support 16 users), the Ethernet NIC, a four-slot passive back plane with
cabinet, floppy drive, power supply and cooling fan. It sells for $3499
(U.S.). Multi-Tech's remote node gateway products are scheduled to start
shipping next month.

"The family of remote node communications servers announced today
complements our line of LAN/WAN gateways", states Raghu Sharma, President
of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "When an organization needs communications
services to and from its LAN, selecting a supplier that can provide the
gateways, modems, and software means easier installations, more efficient
and cohesive tech support, and better packaged system prices. The
combination of our new MultiComRNGateways and extensive modem line gives
LAN administrators the best combination of performance and economy for
their networks."

The MultiComRNGateways consist of both hardware and software. The hardware
is a combination Thinnet/10BASE-T Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC)
which connects the RNS PC to the LAN. Some models include a multiport
serial card which installs into the RNS PC to provide high speed serial
ports for the modems. The software is MultiExpressRNG which consists of
software for both the RNS PC and remote node PC. The MultiComRNGateways
feature advanced statistical reporting to keep track of gateway activity
and performance, and remote administration so the gateway can be managed
from any node PC. When a remote user calls into an IPX Ethernet LAN using
Multi-Tech's new MultiComRNGateway, the remote PC becomes a fully
functional "node" on the network. The remote node PC runs its portion of
MultiExpressRNG which prompts the user to enter the phone number or select
one from memory. The MultiExpressRNG server software answers the call,
sets up a session, and passes the LOGIN prompt to the remote node PC. Once
the caller logs in, operations can be performed by the remote node PC as
if it were connected to the LAN directly. The modem/phone line combination
simply becomes an "extension cord" connecting the remote PC to the LAN.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
