Multi-Tech Ships V.32terbo Modems and Reduces Price

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--October 5, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a leading
data communications technology company, announced that it is shipping its
newest MultiModemII, the MT1932BL, which supports AT&T's 16.8K/19.2K bps
V.32terbo open standard. The V.32terbo standard extends current 9.6K and
14.4K bps modem technology by providing two new data rates in a scheme
otherwise like that of the 14.4K bps V.32bis. The MT1932BL provides the
higher data rates while maintaining compatibility with lower-speed modems
based on V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis and other common modulation standards.
Today's announcement also includes a price reduction for the MT1932BL from
$1199 to $899.

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "Unfortunately, V.fast is
looking more like V.slow when it comes to approvals. Current estimates for
shipments of CCITT standard V.fast modems are late 1994. With the 33%
speed improvement of V.32terbo over V.32bis, users may actually be able to
pay for new modems in line charge savings by the time official V.fast
modems are a reality. Newer applications like Remote LAN Access,
asynchronous muxing, and voice/data communications can benefit enormously
by a 33% percent throughput increase. The performance of Remote Node
access to LANs, for instance, has always been questionable when using slow
modems. With up to 76.8K bps available with V.32terbo (using V.42bis
compression), users can start seeing LAN-like performance for many
remote-node tasks."

The MT1932BL provides synchronous or asynchronous operation over dedicated
or dial-up phone lines, with V.42 error correction in asynchronous mode
for 100% error-free data and V.42bis "4-to-1" data compression for
effective throughputs up to 76.8K bps (depending on file content). For
async operation over dial-up lines, it includes a V.17/Group 3 fax modem
(for 14.4K/9600/4800 bps fax transmissions), MultiExpress data
communications software (for dial-in and dial-out), and MultiExpressFax
software (based on industry standard EIA Class 2 fax modem commands). It
also includes all of the features and speeds of the other MultiModemII
products, with additional support for four-wire leased-line operation.

A dial back-up feature lets the new modem continue data communications even
if its leased line connection fails. When the leased line is returned to
operation, the MT1932BL automatically restores the current datacomm
session to leased-line service. UUCP spoofing using Multi-Tech's own
adaptive protocol enhancing, speeds up UUCP batch file transfers (UNIX)
which use the "g" protocol. The MT1932BL uses industry-standard "AT"
commands for modem configuration and dialing, supports V.25bis for
synchronous dialing applications and has a built-in dialing directory for
storing up to 10 phone numbers. Three RJ11s, or modular phone jacks, are
available on the rear panel for connecting the leased line, dial-up line
and phone in addition to an RS232 serial port for connection to a sync or
async device. A complete set of LEDs provides easy visual monitoring of
the modem's operation. The special Error (ERR) LED lights up when the
leased line is disconnected and the unit has gone to dial back-up (the
back-up phone number, or numbers, must be pre-stored in the modem's
non-volatile memory).

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, manufacturer's reps, systems integrators, value-added
resellers (VARs) and retailers. Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. can be contacted
