Portrait Display Labs Announces Portrait/15 Plus Monitor

Only Full Color Portrait Monitor for Windows

(Fremont, CA) Portrait Display Labs today announced the Portrait/15 Plus, a
15" full color portrait and landscape monitor designed specifically for
IBM compatible PCs running Microsoft Windows. The Portrait/15 Plus will
begin shipping in May. Suggested list price is $999, and the product will
be available direct from Portrait Display Labs at an introductory price of
$799 plus shipping and handling at (800) 858-7744. The monitor is sold
with a 30 day money back guarantee and one year limited warranty.

The Portrait/l S Plus is the only full color portrait display available for
IBM compatible PCs and is also the only color display for PCs that
combines both portrait and landscape in a single monitor. The user
physically rotates the monitor from a portrait (vertical) view to a
landscape (horizontal) view, while software re-maps the screen display to
match the new orientation.

Optimized for 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 resolution at non-interlaced refresh
rates above 70 hz, the Portrait/15 Plus works with all popular accelerated
graphics cards and onboard video suitable for Windows, including those
based on chips from Tseng Labs, S-3, Radius SVGA, ATI, Video Seven, and
XGA II.

The Portrait/15 Plus features a .28mm dot pitch, super-fine coat etch anti
glare screen, swivel and tilt for ergonomic viewing, and full controls for
vertical and horizontal image sizing, brightness and contrast. The
Portrait/l S Plus also meets Sweden's MPR II standard for reduced
electronic and magnetic emissions.

Portrait Display Better for Windows Document Preparation

Portrait display is preferred for Windows word processing and desktop
publishing applications because it permits the user to display and work
with a full 81/2" x 11" document without reducing the image to fit a
horizontal screen. This eliminates the need, required in a landscape
display, for users to continually scroll up and down to see the top,
middle, or bottom of a full document, significantly increasing speed of
data input, document, table, and forms preparation and formatting.

"The growth of Windows and use of WYSIWYG document preparation and word
processing software is driving strong interest in portrait displays for
PCs," said Bruce Cummings, President & CEO of Portrait Display Labs,
"because you get to see more of the document on screen. A portrait monitor
is just plain better, faster, easier to use with Windows word processors
and desktop publishing packages than a landscape monitor ."

"Over 15% -- and that number is growing fast -- of all monitors sold for
the Macintosh, which has always been WYSIWYG, are portrait monitors,"
Cummings said. "Now that PCs have a graphical user interface we expect to
see similar demand for portrait monitors for PCs."

According to Cummings, a portrait-only monitor is superior to a
landscape-only monitor because the primary application of most Windows
users is word processing. Landscape monitors typically display only about
50% of an 81/2" x 11" document, with full page display possible only if
the image is reduced to a level where fonts are virtually unreadable.
"After all, the only reason monitors have been horizontal is that
television sets were horizontal -- its got little to do with the real
81/2" x 11 " world we live in," he said. "If you do a lot of document
processing, and had to make a choice of a landscape-only monitor or a
portrait-only monitor, you're better off with portrait."

Portrait & Landscape in a Single Monitor

Cummings acknowledged that landscape view is more suitable for display of
horizontal 11" x 8 1/2" documents such as full-year spreadsheets and
presentation graphics where the horizontal screen matches that document
size. "So, the best of all worlds is to have a monitor that flips
vertically to portrait display for 8 1/2" x 11" or 8 1/2'' x 14" word
processing and document preparation work, then flips back to a horizontal
display when you need to do a spreadsheet or slide presentation. Only the
Portrait/15 Plus does that on a PC," he said.

The Portrait/15 Plus has a suggested list price of $999, but is sold direct
by Portrait Display Labs to end users for an introductory price of $799.
"In terms of quality, dot pitch, anti-glare, emission standards, and
compatibility with popular Windows graphics cards, the Portrait/15 Plus is
directly comparable in either portrait or landscape mode to high quality
multi-frequency landscape monitors from NEC and Sony," explained Cummings.
"By pricing it against their 15" monitors, we are in effect selling a very
competitive landscape monitor, and giving the customer portrait for
free."
